hello,

Want to go to Normandy beaches ( and check out Omaha , Utah), but looking for a base hotel in that area, thinking or staying for 3 days.
Can anybody recommend a hotel or town I should check out.

Haven't been to Normandy before, so if anybody can suggest other places of interest like the platoons on the beaches, ( I do not know where these are)
It would be very appreciated, by myself and mrs.dxtans.

thanks

Owned by Fiona and Mark, a smashing couple and a lovely place with history, I organised a long weekend there in May for 23 people/17 bikes. They do a great deal for dinner, b&b and they are only about 10 miles south of Cherbourg and perfect for exploring the Normandy beaches and D-Day locations.

If you book it tell them Mike Harbon gave you the recommendation.

pegasus bridge and ranville

Visit Cafe Gondree which is at one of the Pegasus Bridge. Madame Gondree runs the place and it was the first part of France to be liberated on D-Day. She will answer any questions you have and make your trip very memorable indeed.

Arromanches is also worth it but the museum is not, and if you can take a boat trip to the Mulberries.

Pointe du Hoc - very nice but will be full of septics. The most humbling part is knowing what the G.Is did in taking the empty positions there in D-Day.

St Mere Eglise - worth it for the church steeple and the story of the man who landed on it!!

Sorry cant help with accomodation but i can recommend a very good tour guide, his name is Jack, went to Normany first week in June to do all the D Day landing sites etc, we spent one day with Jack and worth every penny €30 per rider, heres a link to his web site :thumb thinking about it he also does B&B.

Don't forget F1 hotels for about £30 for 2 with breakfast! ;)

I stopped at the Normandy Beach b+b in Arromanches- Adrian was an excellent host, made ace breakfasts and even provided salads and breads etc when we cooked a barbeque.

He also has a well stocked beer fridge which you can just help yourself to in the courtyard.

Arromanches is central for lots of things- all the beaches, the American cemetery which has to be seen to be believed, Pont du Hoc, the longues battery etc etc.

Here's where we stayed two years ago. http://www.normandybeach.co.uk/

Highly reccommended and virtually centre of the invasion area. Plus it has covered secure parking for your pride and joy. :thumb2 We had their Bread Oven room which was excellent and the breakfasts are fantastic and keep you going well into the afternoon.

I stayed here a few years ago with a few others from this group. It was good.
