Hi,
Running 3 laptops and desktop with wireless network at home.
Desktop has died, Can't be fixed as it is too old.
So, buying a new desktop, the question is
Do I go for Norton, as all laptops have, and previous desktop come to think of it (which I could transfer) or is there any better alternative?
Have heard those in the know saying Norton uses too much memory, too slow etc etc
Views please:rob

I've not used Norton for some time, as it did tend to slow machines down a bit. From recent experience the free Microsoft Security Essentials seems to be as good as any of the other free products, although I pay for Avira myself.

NO - Norton is very intrusive and expensive for what it does. Have a look at AVAST free anto virus which is very good and free and you can upgrade to a paid version with more whistles and bells if you want.

Personally, we too got fed up with Norton, they won't let you do anything on the computer....We have changed to Windows and you can download a free anti virus for your machine...we have harmony agian in the house.

Only the other week our desktop went mouse up, and i was intending on buying a new one and also a netbook for Simon to take on his European tour next year. The guy in PC World said don't buy a desktop, link your big screen through the netbook and work from there and save over £300...we have done and not looked back.

Hope you find a suitable anti virus for your machine.

try kaspersky, got mine on a 3 user licence deal for 20 quid

Dont use Norton or Macafee for that matter. Save the cash and download a free copy of Microsoft security Essentials. It has been proven in several independent tests to be one of the best available on the market and you would hardly know its running, it uses so little resources. I would use it at work too for over 350 machines but it doesn't have a central way to control it like the other enterprise AV software does. If you really want to splash cash on a product then get Kasperski but there really isnt any need to.

never, its a resource hog and a real pain to 100% remove.

avast or a better bet is kaspersky.

get a 3 license disc on amazon, for about £9 buy the 2009 version, install then just upgrade it on the kaspersky site for free - saves you a fair bit of cash!!

comodo.com do a nice free internet security suite, it's worth looking at, had some good reviews.

Comodo is great but it is annoying as hell. It bugs you all the time with popups asking you if you want to do something or let something do its job. Its probably one of the safest product out there barring the fact that the user gets fed up with it asking questions so just click yes all the time. This eventually makes it one of the unsafest products and all because of the pink squidgy thing poking the keyboard. Generally none techy people just want stuff to do its job and dont want to have to make choices or it bug them.

Norton --- no way jose ....

Been there done that,,,, what a piggin night mare.. Its expensive ,intrusive and a disaster to even try to uninstal completely.. It is designed to be over complicated to convince you and I how wonderful it is (NOT).. There are much better products around and cheaper,, mostly free.. I've had AVG and AVAST on my pc's for ages and have never had a problem... Try the link to see what is available on free downloads,,, hope this helps you...
