Geranger fjord Trollstigen pass, Romsdalen alps, Songefjord, the R55 and R51, 2 of the highest roads in northern europe. Plus many Waterfalls,Tunnels and multi hairpin roads and outstanding natural scenery. we also headed east to Telemark for a visit to the heavy water plant in Rjukan, scene of the special ops sabotage during the second world war, its now a museum

Yes, great pics!
The mountains of Norway is great in sunny weather!

It was raining where I was those days; in Oslo and on my way to Lindkoping (far east in Sweden) and back.

My mate and our wives are going to Norway, Sweden and Denmark next June. We've already booked the ferry from Newcastle to Kristiansand, and plan to ride around to Stavanger and Bergen, before taking the Flam mountain railway. We'll come back via Denmark, Germany, Belgium and the Chunnel from Calais.
Would you be able to pass on any tips please? Anything we should be aware of, other than the pedestrian speed limits and expensive food and beer!
Any info gratefully received - me and the missus will be on our R1200GS, my mate on the Starship Enterprise (1200 LT).

Hi Chris!

I'll post some pics for you!

Here I am at Stalheimskleivene!
There is a thunnel, but please make sure you follow the sign Stalheim - then you get up or down this road, not the thunnel!

Stalheim Hotel is between Voss and Gudvangen.
Voss is east of Bergen, and Gudvangen is at the end of Nærøyfjorden, and Nærøyfjorden is a part of Sognefjorden. Road number E16, but remember to not use the thunnel!

If you go from Bergen to Voss and pass Stalheimskleivene (the funny road) and go to Gudvangen; then you are in a wild nature; steep mountains and fjords, and close to the looooong thunnel Lærdalstunnelen - next picture.

:) Liv.

Here's the looong thunnel!
But don't be afraid; it's wide inside, and have funny lights and two large places to stop if you fell like it.

But:
There is a wery nice road on top of the thunnel - the old road!
Not suitable for lorries!

This is in the area from Aurland to Lærdalsøyri, at the end of Sognefjorden.

If the weather is OK - the old road.
If rain - the thunnel if better for you.

Now you are close to Årdalstangen and Øvre Årdal.
There is a mountain road (perfect for all bike, even LT!) from Øvre Årdal (road 53) to Turtagrø (road 55).
At the right side of the road you can see some of the highest mountains in Norway, and if you follow road 55 to Lom (Sognefjellet) you can see the highest mountain we got; Galdhøpiggen; 2469 meters above sea lewel, and Glittertind; 2465 meter.

:) Liv.

...and here is more!

If you turn left in Lom, ride road 15 and road 63; then you are in the area with Dalsnibba (a funny road and a good view) and Geiranger and Ørnesvingen (The Eagels bend/turn), and follow road 63 to Trollstigen and Åndalsnes.
Trollstigen is a hairpinroad, and so is the road up to Dalsnibba. Perfect for BMW's!

After Åndalsnes you can try to find a road heading for Sweden and home; road 9 to Dombås, and then I you can pick the road you want south.

If you get close to Oslo; I hope you'll stay one night at the campsite close to my favorit cafè Tyrigrava Kro from Wednesday to Thursday;
This picture is taken one normal, typical wednesday evening in sunny weather!
It's buy the lake Gjersjøen, a little south-east of Oslo, I guess you'll find Vinterbro and the amusementpark Tusenfryd at your map; it's between thos places and the border to Oslo.

Please ask me if I can help!
And I hope I can meet you somewhere not too far from Oslo!

:) Liv.

About Æ æ, Ø ø, and Å å:
It's not that complicated!

Æ or æ is the same as AE or ae - like Lærdal = Laerdal.

Ø or ø is the same as OE or oe - like Vøringsfoss = Voeringsfoss.

Å or å is the same as AA or aa - like Dombås = Dombaas.

Got it?

Norway movies.

Hi all!

Here http://www.bmwost.no/arkiv.html is a link to a Norwegian BMW Club, the east part.
Klick on ''Valdresflya'' or ''Lysebotten'' and you get a movie; two bikes are riding!
I have to admit it is on tarmac, and it feels a little boring for me (I have seen Norwegian mountains before), but pehaps it is fun for you.

The Lysebotten-movie:
They are riding from the mountain and down, not all the way to Lysebotten (and the fjord), but close.
They pass a building; that is ''Ørneredet'' - ''The Eagels Nest'' - it's a cafè with a great view. The best part of the road (hairpins) are after Ørneredet.
The roads ends up at Lysebotten, and that is at the bottom at the fjord Lysefjorden. You can take a boat (bring you bike) from Lysebotten to Stavanger.
I was there one year ago, and I rode up from Lysebotten - FUN!
The boat sails to Lysebotten once a day.
From the boat you can see Prekestolen.

The Valdresflya-movie:
It's long!
But it shows how it is up there; it reminds me of the road from Edinburgh to Fort William, the north part.
Not hairpins, but it is up in the mountain.
Valdresflya is the road number 51 from Fagernes (go east from the end of Sognefjorden, east from Øvre Årdal and Årdalstangen, then you'll find Fagernes) to Randsverk. I don't think you'll fin Randsverk on a bad map, but it is the crossing of road number 51 and number 257. (If you follow road number 257 you go to E6, to Vinstra and Lillehammer.)

I hope you learned something about Norway today, and want to come over! (Again?)

:) Liv.

Here is the hairpins up from Lysebotten.

Hi Chris..

The speed limits and the cost of food/drinks you seem to be aware of, On our trip we camped and hytted to keep the cost down but if your hotelling and eating out you will find it expensive..
Beer can be bought cheaper at the supermarkets.....
What i will say is take a good pair of waterproofs as although we had quite a good few days of fine weather it will rain at some point, a little like scotland in that respect...
However all this is worth it as the scenery is spectacular, we concentrated on the fjord area and travelled as far north as Andalnes and the Romsdalen alps..
Any more info drop me a line....

Cheers............Clive..

Anything we should be aware of, other than the pedestrian speed limits and expensive food and beer

In two Norwegian weeks we saw one policeman and half a dozen forward facing cameras

Not only is the food expensive but p*ss awful to boot. We took plenty of Chateau Cardboard and found there was NO customs - or immigration for that matter - presence on arrival

Make sure you take your sunglasses off before riding into tunnels!!!

Don't try and do it all in one hit - plan to go back again 'cos it and the people are bl**dy fantastic

Thank you Liv - surprisingly good quality video - stands "full screen" viewing. Saved me a lot of money - will just watch the video instead of going!

Thanks again,

Chris B.

That was not my plan!
Get over here!
