Norway Ferry Route ????

The motorcycle press in the last week or so have started banging on about the possibility of a new route from Newcastle to Norway, as of yet no potential operator or ships or timetable .

Plans to revive a direct ferry between Newcastle and Norway could make riding to Nordkapp far easier, cutting out thousands of motorway miles across mainland Europe.

We used to do explosive/drugs searches and security when required when the ferry used to come into North Shields and for years we were told by staff that the route had been failing for years and was leeching money like it was going out of fashion .
Wonder where the" information " the press is reporting has come from

You never know, with the boom in motorhomes/campervans, and the outdoors in general it has become, certainly in the the motorhome/campervan press a must do like the NC500 was, good or bad for the locals, it’s certainly popular.
Short term it might be worth a punt for someone with the odd ferry going spare.

Norway has been a campervan car park for many a long year....

I don't think they're in any rush to invite thousands of British bikers to their country.. I don't think they're particularly welcome as it is. With their insanely slow 50mph speed limits and speed cameras on every street corner.

The culture could not be any more different if they tried.

Vikings they aint. They all drive around at Milk Float speeds and go to bed straight after work.

The country is so insanely wealthy as it is, they don't need our money.

I think that it’d be freight that would make a route pay rather than a few bikermates in the summer months.

I’d be on that ferry like a shot if it started up.

I’m pretty sure some of the Scandinavian freight companies would use it too if they put trucks on it. It would save days of travelling for them.

After my first trip around Scandinavia last June I really didn't think it was up to the hype.

The Mountains, lakes and forests are beautiful no doubt. But no better than Scotland, Wales, Europe etc.

The draconian harsh enforcement of snail's pace traffic speed is totally unnecessary. Even on totally remote empty roads with visibility beyond the horizon, you can be hit with a £1500 fine for doing 1mph over the 30-50mph speed limit. A bikers paradise it certainly isn't.

All the most beautiful places are campervan road trains. Endless campervans. And you can't overtake them unless you want to pay a huge fine. With cameras and cops EVERYWHERE.

The culture is VERY different. Maybe in the very few cosmo city centers there is more of a European feel. But for the vast majority of the country there is no life after work. No bars, no restaurants no anything.

Every small town and village seems deserted in the evenings. If you're lucky you might see a small Supermarket and a Kebab shop.

So forget going out for a few beers after a long ride with your mates. You'll sit in your tent drinking tea. If you're lucky and flush enough, you'll be in a hotel. Where you can buy a £12 beer and sit in silence.

Which takes me to the food when on the road. I hope you like Hot dogs. Do they even eat anything else apart from Processed Pink shite sausages. They make British service stations look like Michelin star restaurants

I wouldn't ever go back. I found it boring... There are just so many better places to ride where you can enjoy your bike and enjoy the culture too.

Another view ,,,, I really like the country ,,, been the length of it 5 times from Scotland , we may well be going back next year ,, the scale is immense , the scenery Stunning !

Was in Norway in 2006 when the Newcastle - Bergen ferry was still going. Would love to go back and tour mid/southern Norway.

All this chat about police and speed cameras in Norway. Can't say I recall seeing the police much at all on my run up to Nordkapp. A few fixed speed cameras at places in some towns but otherwise open roads. Bopped along around 50-60mph before the inevitable stop to take a photo.
