Norway here we come - July 2024

Right, YouTube says I can now upload more clips. That said, four cans of Heineken says stay clear of the Internet 😅. We spent this evening planning our second week and have just about everything boxed off.

I'll get back to posting first thing in the morning. Believe me, it's worth the wait - this place is stunning!

Great trip report. I was at Rjukan in 2005 and most of the Norwegian Commando saboteurs were still alive at that time. Ray Mears wrote a book on their exploits called "The real heroes of Telemark" a great read and somewhat different and more extraordinary than the 1965 Kirk Douglas Film "The Hero's of Telemark".

I'll be looking that one up - cheers for the info! 👍

Back to it. Apologies for the delay, had a wee lie in this morning courtesy of Mr. Heineken. At about 6 euro per can, you need to sleep off the shock! 😊 Plus I'm on me hollybops, so the pace is slow (except on the bike of course 😎).

I steered clear of the Ginger Joe in case my grey hair turned Duracell, and Pauline went for the cutesy pic can - not entirely sure that's the correct criteria to use when choosing beers, but I suppose it guarantees variety. Notice her beer is on the map...perhaps unwisely we combined route planning with a beer sesh! 😳😊IMG20240722194532.jpgIMG20240723193309.jpgIMG20240724230333.jpg

Back to the road...

So once we left the cafe the road started to climb and climb and then climb even more. Lots of first gear hairpins which are a doddle on the very well fuelled GS. Road surface was a bit iffy with spots of loose gravel and some quite juicy potholes mid corner. Slow and steady was the best approach. As we ascended, the scenery became more and more stunning, eventually getting ludicrous. Hopefully I'll be able to convey what it's like to ride through this place. I've not been anywhere like it before. Stunning. We'd seen snow on the hilltops but never thought we'd get this close. It would have been rude not to do some snow angels! I think the sign warned about falling through the ice. It was a pleasant 18 degrees so we were safe enough I reckon. Not even a breeze blowing, so there wasn't a sound to be heard. Felt like the top of the world.

Some cracking shots of some stunning scenery there.
After visiting Rjukan in my early teens some 40+ years ago, it has been on my list to revisit Norway again at some point.
Thank you for taking the time to post, a great insight into your trip, a really enjoyable read.
I'm going to try and bump that revisit up the list!
Cheers

That must be Osafjellet!
I've been there, riding my BMW Scarver. That was really fun!
I have tried to make a map for you; https://kart.1881.no?direction={60....587754163680145|7.048015597974883|5730+Ulvik}

So, after petrol-gate we finally rolled into our digs for the night. What a lovely spot! Really well equipped studio apartment which is located over an un-manned supermarket. To open the door you swipe your bank card. Once inside you browse the shelves and use a self service checkout. To leave the store you scan your receipt and off you go. This system would be so abused at home, but it works perfectly here where social responsibility is held in high regard.

Some amusing products to be found in the shop. Don't know why, but the name of the chocolate bar had me grinning. Think I might stock up well on that coffee. 😊😳View attachment 338404View attachment 338415View attachment 338416View attachment 338417View attachment 338418
🤣👍

Been to Norway 4 times now (once on the motorbike) & the scenry is truly magnificent.
Enjoying this, thank you.

Our trip to Osafjellet was a mini detour as our next check in time was 5pm. In typical fashion we rocked up at our fjordside cabin around 7pm. Our host Arno was impressed how we'd come all the way from Ireland. I was tempted to play along but instead explained how we'd been biking only since Oslo airport. Cue plummeting street cred. Ah well. 🙄. Lovely wee spot indeed. This was a three-nighter so a great opportunity to chill out, or take wee luggage-free spins on the bike. Or both. 😎

So what did we do with our days off you might ask. Well on day one I managed to block the jax plumbing! That wet down like a lead balloon with our host 🙄🫤

While we went for a spin our host sorted the issue. Best not to get into details as some folks might be eating 🥴, but all sorted on our return 👍.

Also spent plenty of time chilling out with on our balcony. Midday weather was far too warm for biking so rolled up the shorts and got working on the tan. I wasn't expecting this much downtime, but it was a pleasant surprise. Sometimes you just need to let the world roll on by. 🙂IMG20240725213258.jpg
Beauty and the Beast 😎

Great thread and fantastic pics & videos. I’ve always fancied Norway, but beer prices and very strict speed limits have deterred me. Does look breathtaking though. You’ve motivated me for sure.
PS. That Oresund Bridge is meant to be something else. Assume you’re not crossing on way home as just posting bike back??

Today we took a wee spin out to check out a nearby waterfall. Twas nice to see, but the gaggle of middle Eastern tourists who were very self indulged took the shine off it. Whilst getting a sticker for the top box in the souvenir shop I observed their expectant demeanour that presumed everyone would wait upon them. I'm a very easy going fella, but one thing that boils my piss is that presumption of 'station' that some folks have. One of the more ugly sides of human nature. Anyways, never one to let the fun be spoiled we headed off on another explore... IMG_20240725_183527.jpg

Super report and thank you for taking the time to put it all together .. great stuff so keep it coming. :)
