visiting Norway in August

My son and I will be motorcycling in Norway for 2 1/2 weeks this August (from 15/8). Thank you for all the useful information here. I will try to get the motorcycling map that was recommended above.

2 questions:
1. Has anyone posted a Garmin track for any S. Norway motorcycle trips?
2. I am deliberately keeping the itinerary flexible, hoping to stay in hostels...am I likely to have any difficulty finding a place to stay?

2. Hyttes. They are everywhere. In official centres or in people's back yards.

The "main" holiday time in Norway where most people have their holidays is in July. As you simondippenhall are traveling in mid August there will probably be more vacant places and easier to find somewhere to stay over night.
Cappelens maps over Norway are the most common used by norwegians, and I personally find their road maps over Norway to be the best. They also have good maps for the whole Scandinavia.

Thank you for that helpful advice...makes me feel we will probably have a choice of places to stay, and will not bring a tent.

Seriously, take a tent.
You may decide to not use it, as there will be plenty of alternatives.
But you may well want to stay the night somewhere stunning and remote instead, and without a tent or bivvy bag there will be no choice.

I agree with you AdamA. Bring a tent so you have the flexibility to camp away from the beaten track, its experiences like that that give the best memories. Remember also that you might have really bad luck and that the only place to stay for miles is full. If the rain is puring down and the light fading its not so fun to search for a another place.

I'm off to Nordkapp in June. Up through Sweden and back down the Norwegian coast. 2 - 18 June. Camping. Lotta miles so whilst not exactly what I would call an 'adventure', it should at least be a challenge and fun

As far as weather goes, I think preparing for EVERYTHING from an Englsih winter's day to a decent summer's day should cover everything that will get thrown at one in a couple of weeks.

If you are coming over to see fjords, hairpins and mountains; skip Sweden.
I'm not writing this because I'm Norwegian. Look at a good topographic map, and you'll see what I mean.
