:beerjug:

I'm sorry you missed that. :(
-But you saw MUCH of the good parts in Norway on that tour! :thumb2
Did you try to find ALL the places I have written about?

But may be you return some day, perhaps not for a long tour like this year, but for 2 weeks, to see more of the areas you like best. And then try the tram/train to the top of Gastadtoppen?
If so let me know, and if I can, and if you want to, I meet you at Rjukan and go up to the top with you. :)

I'm glad you got so much sun, so much blue sky! :)

:) Liv.

You know about the Heawy Water Plant at Rjukan, and how a group of Norwegians tried to stop that?
Well, this is not about that, this is how to get to the TOP of a mountain, to get a reall great view, and NOT climb all day!
:idea
Gaustabanen!
http://gaustabanen.no/turen-opp
First one tram horizontally, then another tram (or should I call it train?) steep up to he top. Then walk inside the mountain, and then you open a door and see the view.
In perfect weather you can se 1/6 of Norway from the top!

If you click at Gaustatoppen here you can see the mountain Gaustatoppen, where the tram/trains are inside: http://www.krossobanen.no/webcampage.htm
And a map: https://maps.google.no/maps?saddr=R...oq=rjuk&t=p&mra=ls&z=13&lci=com.panoramio.all
And the only link in English: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attracti...inn_Municipality_Telemark_Eastern_Norway.html

-What do you think?
Wanna meet me and go up there with me?
My mom has been there and she tell me it is so special, and not hard for a sofa potato like me. :thumb2

:) Liv.

For you in English!

Good one Liv ... keep up the good work :thumby:

If/when Sue and myself visit Norway again we will hunt you down ;)

:beerjug:

Yes it is right.
Also as you can see it's quite infrequent and the last boat to Lysboten is really early.
TAKE NOTE.
Its a LONG way round by road if you were planning on taking the ferry and don't get there till dinner time...:blast

Thanks Adam, been reading your trip reports which are very useful and great entertainment :-) The plan is to catch the ferry at Lysebotn and get off at Forsand. I'm aiming to get off the Immingham-Brevik ferry in the morning and meander over to Lysebotn that day then find a campsite after I get off the ferry. I was thinking about an early June start but I can also do Lysebotn at end of the trip.

When we got to Lysbotn there was another couple waiting for the ferry, they had been there since the previous day and camped up in the woods for the night ... and nearly got bitten to death by the mozzies

The small terminal building, with toilets, was open, centrally heated and two very large leather settes in there (no staff) ... so don't camp if you get there early :D

Yeah we did the same sort of thing mate, arriving way late for the ferry from Songesand . We decided we didn't want to wait for the first ferry next day tho (esp as the building there isn't as nice) , so headed over for Sandnes and a Hotel, getting in around midnight after booking online in the reception. We then got going early doors to make Lysebotn for a great breakfast.
It was a hectic 24 hrs, and a 560mile day iirc, but it's all part of the adventure isn't it. :D

Whatever way you do it Dave you won't regret it.

Yeah we did the same sort of thing mate, arriving way late for the ferry from Songesand ......

Ah yes, I made a mistake above :blast

It was Songesand we found, totally by mistake, didn't really know where we were or where we were going, great eh :thumb Well Sue (Gracie) was leader that day

It was Songesand where we met the other couple who had camped out, waiting for the ferry to Lysbotn, where the terminal building was open and centrally heated

You had to use the 'phone to get the ferry to call for ya :D

:beerjug:

I'm just glad I didn't listen to Funners who wanted to try and ride the trail through the hills to the north of Lysefjord.
He still insists it would have been doable, but looking on http://kart.gulesider.no it deffo looks like a goat track to me!:augie

No Liv. We were at D, wanting to get to C.
If you zoom in on the Gule Sider map there are dotted lines running between the two on the north side of the fjord, roughly parallel with the shore. I believe they are foot paths.

Aah!
I believe that is only for goats. :)
But I know some of the members here are like goats on their bikes, so I'm trying to find out if it is doable, and legal.

You want to ride from Via1 to Via2 on this map? http://kart.gulesider.no/m/nk9Fg
And if there are a road (ment for tractors only) like this, and legal, you are happy with that? https://maps.google.no/maps?saddr=L...&panoid=ZQJuWSbm42wIQeZW_NCuMQ&cbp=12,60,,1,0

I have tried, but this is what the map tell me: https://maps.google.no/maps?saddr=L...assbottvatnet&t=h&mra=ls&via=1,2,3,4,8,9&z=11
Normally when the Google map tell me it is not possible, it is not possible for a car.
But sometimes, NOT often, there are a bad road/good foot path, perhaps not legal for us on a motorbike, but doable, if you think you are a goat.
:)

So far my guess is:
No, it's not legal, because of the animals.
Perhaps doable, but not legal because how to help you if you need help?
But I do not know.

I would not do it, unless a local tell me he/she has done it.
But that is me, and I'm not a goat. Or think I am. But some of you do, I know. :)

:) Liv.

Is it possible for a GS?

No. :nono
Ride from start to stop on this map, NOT using the ferry: http://kart.gulesider.no/m/nyW8O = No.

I asked the boss, Kjell, at the B&B in Lysebotn, http://www.lysegard.com/index_e.htm . and he said; no.
He said a rider with a trial bike did it some years ago, but it was hard. One of the problems is a river.
From what he told me I would say not possible for a BMW GS, but perhaps Timolgra or some of the crazy trialriders here can do it, if there are not too much water in the river - with some help from friends.
Kjell also told me the locals have plans for making a narrow road or track, or something, so it will be possible some day in the future.
Some day... :popcorn

Tour of Sweden and Norway

I am going to visit some friends in Sweden in early June (near Stockholm).
The I'm gonna ride north for a bit then west into Norway.
Then I'd aim in a southerly direction for the Kristiansand - Hirtshals ferry into Denmark then home.

I checked your early post:
http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?62106-5-days-in-Norway/page3

is this still a good route? I guess not much has changed in 8 years :)
I really have no definite plans as to where I'd start so am open to any suggestions. I would take a tent but would prefer something more comfortable for my ageing limbs.... ;)

Cheers!
Simon.
