Norway Norway Norway!

Hello Liv. Have been reading all the information you have on this thread, thanks for putting it together. Going to be coming to Norway next summer around beginning of July. Have tents but think the hytter will be best for us 4bikes 5 people (3 men 2 women) have looked at the camping web sites and they are in English but the booking information is in Norwegian so not sure of prices. Spotted the school holidays are around this time as well, in your experience are the sites likely to be very busy if we just turn up and try and get cabins.
Were going to Nord Kapp but thinking about it now having read the various reports:eek: Only 2 GSs others are a GT and RT so will be sticking to tarmac all the way. Once we know when and were we are may be we can call in and say hello.:beerjug:

Cool! :clap
PM me when you know the dates & ca.route.
Or ask for more information.

...and I'll give you some info right now:
You can ride all types of motorbikes to Nordkapp! There are tarmac, I promise! :)
But the funniest back roads are gravel.
But, as mentioned a few times before; the funniest area are in the south-west. If you like snow and tarmac; the old road from Aurland to Lærdal (on top of the looooooong tunnel Lærdalstunnelen http://maps.google.no/maps?f=d&sour...,6.510985&sspn=0.572296,1.752319&ie=UTF8&z=11), and Vikafjellet to Vik in Sogn: http://maps.google.no/maps?f=d&sour...04,6.466827&sspn=0.287446,0.87616&ie=UTF8&z=9
and you can ride it with all legal motorbikes! It might be difficult with a rebuild extreme long fork, but for the rest it is peanuts.

Don't be afraid - there ARE people riding bikes here too! ;)

CU, I hope!:bounce1

:) Liv.

A great resource Liv, thanks for taking the time to do this. :thumb2

With two others, I am planning a trip, in June / July just after the TT so will no doubt be picking your brain but for now there is so much to read!

Heff asked for info from bikers in Ireland here:
http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25006
...-and I posted something about the area Lysebotn - Suleskar; a road with many hairpins.
A quick ferry are going on the fjord all year, but the road are closed in vinter. They try to open it in the midle of May. Keep an eye on weatherforecast before you ride Lysebotn - Suleskar and further east on this narrow road in May!
It's tarmac, but there might be a little snow in a cold day.
Natives love this road! :bounce1

Apologies if it's already been posted

Thank you - I love it! :bounce1
-When do I see you over here, then? Soon, I hope. :thumb2

On the 360-tour in your link a small farm called Skageflå is mentioned.
You can walk up there, if you like. Many tourists do!
I know you do not need a road to ride a motorbike, but it is not possible to ride up to Skageflå! :eek
More info about Skageflå in Geiranger here:
In Norwegian, but there are pictures too: http://www.klikk.no/produkthjemmesider/vimenn/article239535.ece
In English, and info about the area Geiranger: http://www.geiranger.no/attraksjoner/naturattraksjoner/skagefla_en

Pop over, Ian! I miss your beard! :rob :hug

Motorcycle parking in Oslo

Hi all.

My first post on this forum so please be gentle with me :comfort

I'm touring Norway, Sweden etc. this June/July and intend to spend a night in a hotel (not picked one yet) in Oslo. Can anyone give me an idea as to what the parking situation is with motorcycles as many hotels around the city centre do not appear to have their own car parking facilities? I can find loads of information about car parking (public & private) but nothing specific to motorcycles.

Thanks.

Not a problem. Most downtown hotels have parking garages. In the private parking garages, the general rule is that you can park for free if you can pass the barrier. Some have set aside space for us. Unfortunately, a couple have recently installed longer barriers.

There are several designated mc parking spaces on the streets. These are free, but you have to pay if you park in a car space. This also applies to the outdoor parking lots, municipal and private. You cannot park on pavements, or other areas a French or Spanish rider would consider a natural space.

I feel quite safe leaving my bike anywhere in town. I lock it, and don't leave a GPS or helmet hanging, of course.

One more, same road, same day.

Urnes and Solvorn - not on the main road.

If you want to get off the main road and relaxe and get a meal or stay the night (hotel, hostel or tent), and visit our oldest stave church Urnes, read more:

Why did people build houses and live here? They hardly had a road...
Well, before we got engines&wheels we didn't need roads that much because the fjord was the ''main road''. It is easier to understand why people lived like they did many years ago if you think of the fjord as a highway.

When I was at Urnes a farmer let me spend one night on his ground, it didn't rain so I didn't put up my tent, I only used my mattress and my sleepingbag. So my view was raspberries, mountains, the fjord and the stars. I loved it!

Recommended Norwegian routes

Forgive me if this has been posted already, but just in case.

Whilst in Stockholm, i tripped over Cappelens' map of recommended Norwegian roads for motorcycling. It's quite good, with the roads they suggest highlighted on the map sheet in pink.

I guess it's possible to order it via any good book shop here in the UK, or from a specialist map shop. If not, you can order from Norway, direct: http://www.cappelendamm.no/main/Katalog.aspx?f=27&artid=4967

The ISBN no. is: 978-82-02-29742-8

Cappelenkarts' website is: www.cappelenkart.no

I found the map on their website by entering the ISBN number, then pushing the 'SOK' button, which I guessed (correctly) is probably 'Search'. Up it popped.
