I have spent ages on this site trying to figure out what the problem is and not sure.

Lost drive. Horrible crunching noise. Could change gear easily with clutch in but ease clutch out in any gear then horrible noise and no drive.

Took off the final drive, suspecting that. Spins freely. No crunching. Oil filthy.

With the gaiter off and final drive splines back in the universal joint, when I spin the back wheel the splines rotate inside the universal joint.

Does this mean the shaft has to be replaced? If so how? Does it have to go to BMW?

Help most appreciated...

Its a 1200 GS 2004 model BTW

It sounds nasty, take out the drive shaft and check everything, splines on the gearbox output, the driveshaft itself and the pinion shaft on the FD. If you are losing drive something must be serously mashed.

imac Drain your gearbox oil before you do anymore!

If it's good??? Then I'm sorry but you may have the input shaft splines problem

The clutch looses it's splines and just sits and spins on the input shaft until you try to put load on it

It's an input shaft required and new clutch and associated bits

Don't panic tho I know a young lady that has a low mileage gearbox on her R1200R that she will be parting out due to being hit and knocked off, Should fit fit

If you want any tips about splitting the gearbox out drop me a pm I've done it a couple of times and I've done the input shaft too

The worst bit is the time taking all the plastics off to reach the tail lamp / alarm loom

Just to get this correct....

You can see the splines turning inside the universal joint but the shaft itself is not turning (so the shaft or splines have stripped) or can you see the whole shaft turning?

I have the driveshaft snap near the FD makeing some horrible sounds but it was pretty obvious once I dropped the FD down. In retrospect I could of pulled back the rubber gaitor and checked it that way.

Check you shaft first, mine is the same age as yours.....

...oh, changing the shaft is easy (it slides out) once you have pulled it off the gearbox side but if you have stripped the shaft you may have another problem.

Imac I was tired when I read your first post

Disregard my first post if the splines are definitely turning inside the UJ of the propshaft

Sounds like the splines are worn out of your Propshaft or on the final drive itself

A photo would help

That's also how I read it. If that's what's happening imac, no it's a very straight forward job to pull the shaft out of the gear box end and replace. However, I'd be concerned that the FD splines may also be knackered :nenau

Not a final drive problem

Many thanks for help, When you say the shaft just pulls out does that mean
I do not need to take off the swing arm as it comes out the casing ,
I have only seen a photo of a shaft .To me it looked like a solid shaft in
a tube with a uv joint at both ends. The local non BMW mechanics have
put us off by saying you need the right tools How do you refit the new
shaft on to the gear box drive , with a little care can the splines be pushed
back onto the drive,

The upper part of the shaft fits into the gearbox output splines but can be pulled off as its only held on by a circlip. You pull back the upper gaitor on the s/arm and carefully with a screwdriver you can pry the shaft off the gearbox end without removing the swinging arm. Be careful of your paintwork when doing this.

imac, I went through a bit of a 'learning process' on shafts recently, have a look HERE. It should help and you'll also become an expert on finishing and oiling wooden work tops :thumb

Not a final drive problem

With your help I have removed the drive shaft ,The splines on the UV joint

at the final drive end are all worn . I will now check the ones on the final

drive. Is it quite common to get water through the gaitor as it has washed

all the grease off the joint.

So thanks again to all with their advice and tips, Outtomunch for his step

by step photos All I need to do now is source a drive shaft

Any tips would be much appreciated New or Little used.

Cheers IMAC

The universal joint is supposed to be "sealed for life" but I think the general wisdom is to take the shaft out when you change the FD oil. Check the joint and lube the shaft at both ends.

Even if you do not actually get water in the tube past the gaitor it it likely to be cold and damp for most of winter.

I (and I know one other) have had the rear universal snap. I was at walking pace the other at motorway speed. I have not heard of the splines wearing out but I suppose anything will wear given enough time and lack of lubrication.
