Not enough Space on Computer - Garmin says no

I have been trying to update the maps on my Nav V to the latest version. I've had it a few years and not had a problem in the past but Garmin Express throws up an error report that there is 'insufficient memory on the computer it needs 18Gb free space'. I last updated it to V 2024.10 in June 2023 with no issues.

I have set the options to 'Device and Computer' and pointed the installation on the PC to a drive with 500 Gb free plus there is a 16Gb SD card in the Nav. I've also tried a new 32Gb SD card formatted to FAT32 but still no joy.

Any pointers would be welcomed.

try doing the device only option and then maybe re installing and selecting both?

I should have said I've tried that and still get the same error. Just crazy there' load of free space on the PC.

do you still have back-up versions of the older ones hidden away? I revitalised a laptop with what I thought was a full SSD by following instructions here: https://www.zumouserforums.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=2044

you say you pointed it to a drive with 500gb of space was this C drive the drive where all your progs are stored (your boot drive) or was it a slave drive. if slave drive try letting it install to just the pc in its default location, should be something like C:\ProgramData\GARMIN\Maps if using a pc.

I bought my nav V used and it was almost full internal memory wise, I stripped out lots of old routes and tracks, foreign user manuals, foreign voices..... anything that wasn't needed that was ok for while. Eventually after update last year it installed the maps onto my SD card as the main memory was full and its worked fine updates wise ever since. Did you format the SD card in the nav V or via the PC?

It’s his home computer’s drive that Garmin is saying is full, not his GPS device. At least that’s how I read the opening post.



If in reality it’s his device that Garmin is reporting as full, I suggest he inserts a virgin fresh SD card into it.

Update maps are added in addition to older maps, which means you are filling up space (PC and Device if both selected). I can understand why it does this because all routes created in older maps can be kept as they are or you can choose an option to re-route on new map.

Anyway, it sounds as the op has loads of space but if a clear out is required maybe look at the map versions.

also, on a PC (and presumably a Mac), each edition of the mapping is an installed application in Windows. The older version is maintained. The older versions appear in a drop down in Basecamp so you can flip between them. Each version will take up several GB of data. I only keep one older version in addition to the latest release. To delete old version you have to go into Windows setup and select Add/remove. Then delete the older versions of mapping.

Just to fill in a bit of information, I have tried using a new formatted SD to no avail BUT I do see that I only have 14 Gb free on my C: drive (ONLY - that was a massive number a few years ago). I've uninstalled Basecamp from the C:/Program Files/ Garmin directory in the hope that I could reinstall it on the D: partition which has 400 Gb free but that doesn't seem possible as it defaults back to the original.
I'm now going to try to increase the size of the C; drive partition from 80 Gb to 120 Gb. (I'd like to have just one partition but that's how it came new). Hopefully that should do it.

Have a read through this thread. It might solve your issue? I know I found a program and how to copy the whole program and maps to a different pc (location). Might be the same thread I read through to get there...https://www.ukgser.com/community/threads/basecamp-maps-install-directory.304890/

You can just copy the map directory (& content) to any drive you like and then you must either create or modify the shortcut that tells the PC & software their new location.

I sorted out the hard drives in my PC to give sufficient space but then the Nav V wouldn't recognise the SD card! It was showing up in file manager but the Nav couldn't find it. After a reformat of the whole SD card and trying several times it finally all seemed to come together and allowed me to install the update on the PC only I've now installed it on to the Nav using Map Install - finally!
