Not my best day ever.

Was enjoying some late winter sunshine last week in Plymouth................ until this happened.
Let me set the scene... lovely dry bright day, dry roads great visibility. Riding into Plymouth heading towards the city centre. 4 lanes of traffic, 2 going up the hill towards me, 2 going down. The 2 lanes going down the hill were virtually stationary due to roadworks on the roundabout about 400 metres ahead at the bottom of the hill.
So, I decided to slowly make my way past the stationary traffic as there was nothing coming up the hill towards me. The central divide was a perforated white line so I was perfectly within my rights to overtake. I was doing about 10-15 mph when the guy in the Audi decided that he'd had enough of waiting and without warning or indication decided to do a U turn just as I was passing right next to him. You can see the results. Police arrived and breathalysed everyone involved: Me = score 0, car driver = score 58!!!
This was at 12:15 pm ffs.
Anyway, would anyone like to guess at the repair estimate for my bike?

I turned the bike off within seconds so hopefully the damage is just cosmetic.
Though now you've got me worried. What would be an unacceptable amount of time for the bike to be running on its side?

Similar thing happened to me in London (pedestrian, not Audi) and the repair bill to my 06 GS came to £4,200. However this was BMW Battersea walking around the bike and noting down everything that had even a light scratch ("we are not accident assessors sir, that is down to the insurance company"). Aviva's computer said yes so I got new final drive, exhaust, (despite the bike only falling on the right hand side), seat, screen, mirrors topbox etc. Lost my no claims but my premium only went up £80 the following year

It doesn't - so I wouldn't worry.


I guess you have learned in practice, what everyone advises when filtering............... "Watch out for car-drivers suddenly deciding to do a U-turn"

No it was the other guy with the 'it's a fair cop guv'nor, I'm fecked' look on his face. The other chap and his wife (still in the car) were passengers. The old boy did have to drive the car to the local police station though as his mate was over the limit. They re-tested him at the station and the culprit blew 51 in evidence. The police then waited till he was sober enough to interview.
The police were superb throughout. The guy who interviewed me and collected all the perp's details was a GS'er himself and very sympathetic.

Hey Mike, you're spot on with the repair bill, £4,200 Ocean BMW know how to charge
But seriously, I'd never dropped or scratched my bike prior to this incident. I told the guys at Ocean that anything at all they found would be directly attributable to this accident and I wanted it put right. They did a good job of totting it all up and got the repairs authorised within a week. Lent me a brand new RT WC into the bargain.
Should have the old girl back as good as new within a couple of days.

If it makes you feel any better if he is convicted his insurance will pay out for you but not on his claim

I'd also get checked out for any injuries - stuff shoulder sore back etc - you never know.
