Not start in gear

For a while now my bike will not start in gear with the clutch pulled in. only way to start it is put it into neutral. Not the worst thing in the world but i thought i would see if i could fix the problem. Guess what? I cant.
First thing i tried was making sure the clutch microswitch was clean and i could here it clicking. Put it back in and adjusted it so i could here the click when the clutch lever was pulled half way in. Still wont start in gear. Next thing was to swap the microswitch from the front brake lever and use it on the clutch lever as the two switches are the same but it still will not start. the display panal shows me what gear i am in and the green light shines when its in neutral. With the engine running and in gear with the clutch lever pulled in, the engine will cut out when you put side stand down. Seeing the display works correctly and the side stand stops the engine i ruled them out. if any of you guys can think of anything else, i will give it a bash

this mate is a switch issue,i cant remember but its either at the lever or the switch in the box to tell you what gear your are in ,someone will come along soon and tell you exactly where to look.
as far as bridging the switches out i think you cant ,something to do with the canbus system.

It does sound like the switch - are you sure the brake switch was working before you swapped them over? The fact that you can hear the click doesn't mean it works - I had the same problem. Just one thing I can add - if the bike is in gear before you turn on the ignition, the bike won't start even if you then put it into neutral and hold the clutch lever in - well, thats what happens on mine anyway. You have to make sure the bike is in neutral before turning the ignition on for it to start.

Hi and thanks for the replies. the brake light switch was working and the clutch switch is now on the brakes and working fine.

Hi,

I had a similar issue .... The first thing to explore is the micro switch which you have done, seems you have satisfied yourself that it's good.

My switch (es) were good, I had the dealer check it .... but sometimes it would start in the manner you describe, Side stand up, in gear, clutch in and other times it would not. .. and guess what, when the dealers mech was looking at it, it behaved impeccably.

I just left it, not the biggest issue in the world, however what has now happened is that my gear position sensor has fritzed itself, even though the green neutral light is displayed, it's in gear, when in 1st or second the gear indicator is blank sometimes or flashes between the 2, - While on the sidestand sometimes it cuts out as the display changes even in Neutral.

I had the connectors off and had them given a good spray - tbh they looked OK to my eye's, no grot or corrosion, problem still persists, -

I am now having the Gear position sensor changed which I am fairly confident should fix my problem - plus the issue you have.

I understand it isn't a huge job, more awkward than complex or even hugely expensive.



The next thing is the gear position sensor on the rear of the engine,

yes, the bike is in neutral and green light on in the display. clutch lever out and she starts without any problems. if i have the bike in 1st gear, turn on ignition, let it run through its start up then pull the clutch lever in, nothing happens. what part do i smack with a 4lb lump hammer

As has been mentioned, check out the gear position sensor on the back of the gear box - a good spray of WD40 often sorts it out.

Have you not just answered it then? If the bike is in 1st gear and then you turn on the ignition it won't start - same as mine, thats what I said above. I think its a Bavarian safety feature and IIRC its in the manual.

No he hasn't , because I can go through the same sequence and mine WILL start.

if the clutch is pulled in it should start in gear as it overides the gear sensor. if you stall the bike as you move away, you should be able to hold in the clutch, hit the start button and start the engine or am i being totally thick?

hi,lads i had the same prob with mine, bought a new switch and ajusted it.the free play is important not just right it wont work so try 5/6 mm and just nip the alanscrew and try again

Nope, you're not thick, you should be able to do that just fine because the ignition is still on when you stalled. All I'm saying is that if the bike was in gear before you switch on the ignition in the first place it won't start - well, thats what my '08 does and I am sure I have read this in the manual. Will dig it out when I get home.

I had the same problem as you have and it was the switch that was duff - I was just trying another possibility as you have tried swapping switches already.

Means yours is working differently from mine then. I will dig out the manual - I'm sure I read it there that the engine won't start if the bike was in gear before the ignition was switched on even with the clutch in.

But I have been known to be wrong before now
