right id made my mind up finally, im going for the gs which would be great for me and the my other arf and it ticks most the boxes.
Then suddenly ive found myself looking at a triumph tiger and it keeps drawing me in the used price looks good from a buyers point of view and it seems a decent bike oh what to do what to do any thoughts guys?

Buying a bike shouldn't be a wholly rational decision. Just ticking the boxes won't give you the answer. Which one do you want?

If that doesn't give you the answer, try a long test ride on both if possible.

Personally I'd go for a Tiger over an 800GS any day.

If you're talking about the 900 or the 955 they are very capable (but don;t they sound like a concrete mixer with the mechanical noises they make?)

But if you're talking 1050 Then "If" you want to do any playing off road the 1050 is not for you it's a focussed road bike, a frickin quick focussed road bike!

And They are cheap because residual prices are not good on them

The Motor suspension and brakes are superb and the build quality is excellent it seems that they moved the goalposts on what was quite a reasonable "All Rounder"

Go check a Tiger forum.....I bet it'll be the same

This is a forum for GSers....so the first thing that someone is going to post up if something goes wrong.....people don't come along and say 'OO, another month, another 5k miles, nothing went wrong'

For me it all comes down to when i open the garage, if you set for a BMW but started to sway, sit and think (and be honest) which bike will make you beam with joy everytime you see it. The bikes are so close in performance it starts to come to looks...........well in my opinion!!!

What do you want the bike for, mate?

If you're road touring all the time with no thought of anything more off-road than an very occasional firm, dry gravel track - then I'd go for the Tiger.
If you think you'd like to play on green lanes and potholed/muddy tracks,expect to fall off a few times but want the capability to tour onroad reasonably well- go for the GS.

Horses for courses an' all that. I can't see them as a direct comparison, really.

I run one and find it great but you may not.

As Bill says in these days of internet forums all bikes appear to have some issues and if you just relied on internet forums you would never buy any brand of bike.

The Tiger 1050 is more on a par with the 1200 GS rather than the 800 so if you have already chosen the 800 over the 1200 then most of those reasons would still apply to the Tiger/800.

As mentioned before buy with your heart theres no point being sat on a tiger and lusting after after the 800 GS

They are both great bikes but in very different ways

Just do it. only you can make the choice, Triumph will be quicker BMW the better investment, pays yer money.............I have a Triumph RS 955I which is a super day out bike but for serious miles its the Beemer for me.

800 or a Tiger

I wanted a 800, I test road a 800 and a 1200. I still wanted the 800.


What did I buy this week............... another Triumph.


It came down to cost. The 800's lose an awful lot of money in the 1st year.
Triumph dealers are willing to do deals for cash. £7500 for this years colours 800GS. No luggage on a bike listed at £8145 with the extras I wanted.

Deal I've done is ABS equipped bike list price £8875, comes with the panniers. Price to me £7345 OTR (watch the OTR it's worth £121, and not all dealers will offer it !)

It's costing me £885 to swap from my last Triumph which sold two weeks ago and a non ABS with 5600 miles to a brand new one.

I still love the 800, but money is money and the 1050 engine is lovely.

I had my Triumph Trophy for 10 yrs (from new), the only faults were strange mis-fire when it got to 8yrs old - UK Gill coils!! A known fault on the forums, and a split fuel hose at 9yrs old, "They all go brittle at that age, but we still don't keep them in stock!".

I wanted a lighter bike, 1200 Trophy = 235kg, Tiger = 215kg, F800GS = 176kg so it was the BMW. It's lighter, more flickable and more fun!! I've not looked back so far!!

In 9.75yrs time I'll let you know if the BMW looks as good as the Triumph did when I sold it - NO rust, NO tarnished brightwork, NO paint faults and NO seat splits, oh yes and STILL on the original chain!!! (Take note BMW!).
