NuMaps updating

I have a StreetPilot 2720 that when new, before I owned it, came with City Nav North America V7 NT pre-installed (no disk). The previous owner had purchased City Nav Europe v9 (non NT) and was using this in the supplementary memory space with only about 1/3 of Europe fitting in at only one time.

In my quest to tinker I eventually found a way to replace the primary US mapping with a copy of City Nav 2008 Update which I had legitimately purchased from Garmin. It was a convoluted a tricky operation but ultimately successful with input and help from a couple of other 2720 users.

In the past I've updated my mapping every two years and with a trip to the Alps in the offing later this summer I'm considering doing this.

However, the Garmin website tells me that the new NuMap mapping update (there are warnings in the shopping cart and elsewhere) will only upgrade my 2720's mapping if it's done so with the the region originally pre-installed on the unit. I'm not sure if my 'shoe-horned' European primary mapping will make this seamless or I'll have a problem.

If I can get a NuMap install onto my PC under Mapsource I reckon that I can then take the same approach to my earlier 'shoe-horned' City Nav 2008 install.

So the burning question is: Will a NuMap download install onto my PC under Mapsource before attempting to install onto my GPS?

The alternative is to buy an update on DVD which is still an option for the OneTime update. I'll probably go for the OneTime update anyway, rather than the LifeTime option, as I will hopefully be replacing the 2720 next year. I'm pretty sure that with the DVD install I can do my shoe-horn install if necessary. They do warn that you might not get the very latest mapping on DVD though.

How come the price difference between OneTime and LifeTime updates is only $10 in the US, yet £30 here?

What I'm asking is that when you install a downloaded version of NuMaps does it install under Mapsource first before going on to update the mapping on your GPS

Hmm... I think you will find that it tries to update the original maps on the gps first.

I have also just downloaded a numaps update for my garmin c510 and am struggling to get it to install to the gps unit. The maps extract themselves fine but when the program tries to update the unit, it says there is insufficient memory and cant go any further. Out of interest i tried swapping my 256mb card for a 1gb one, bit to no avail.

I cant see the new maps in mapsource either. I had hoped that I could have selected the maps i needed from mapsource and just copied those across.

What really pissed me off though is that i was following garmins own link From mapsource, based on my particular gps model and serial number. I have now paid over 50euros for a load of maps i cant see, and garmin have not answered my emails for support yet.

Thanks, I thought that might be the case. I ordered the DVD update last week anyway.

Hopefully I can do my shoehorn update if it doesn't work straight off. As my unit was originally a US market version of the 2720 it didn't accept the 2008 update I purchased and I had to resort to the complex 'shoehorn' method. The update seems to recognise that the unit is not from this continent and refuses to update. Now, if this recognition is down to something in the firmware or only down to the pre-installed mapping I'm not sure. If the latter I should no be able to do a straight, by the book, update. We'll see.

If you're trying to install all of Europe onto a 1GB card then it's too small. If it's just UK and Ireland then 1GB will be ample. City Nav Europe 2008 NT uses about 1.4GB, 2011 mapping will be bigger, by how much I don't know.

Not sure if your GPS will be able to address the full 8GB, a 2GB would suffice.

I'm not sure TBH but I do know that some devices have this issue. Garmin StreetPilot 2610 did ISTR though this is an earlier model. Try it an see first I suppose.

No. It tries to install the maps onto the GPS first. However, this process didn't work on mine as I didn't have enough memory, and I was then able to install a map subset from Mapsource.

Well, I finally got somewhere...

On the same day that my memory card arrived (thanks Amazon - you beat the Irish postal "system"...) got an email from Garmin support.

In a nutshell they said that my unit doesn't have enough internal memory, so follow the instructons they attached.

What they gave me was a 41 step guide to extracting the downloaded file manually, deleting certain files from the satnav unt, opening Mapinstall , and loading on the maps that I wanted.

I have to say it worked a treat, except (and there had to be an except didn't there?) the internal memory on the 510C is so pitifully small that I cannot even hold the whole of Ireland and the UK, let alone any of mainland Yurp! So sorry London and eastern England - It's paper-only navigation only for you for now...

Now, I will try using the new card sometime, but unfortunately my ageing PC wont read it, so I cannot even try to copy stuff on to it. (The Garmin will read it, but because it has no existng map data on it I cannot even get past the pin on the unit to allow Mapinstall a chance to do its magic.

BTW now that 've done all this, I can see the new maps in mapsource as well as my older sets. And in my frustration I've downloaded TomTom for my iphone and its great...

Finally had to cave in and get the downloaded version of the 2011 mapping update as the delivery date for the DVD version slipped from June to July and I leave for the Alps next Tuesday.

Wasn't sure it was going to work as I know Garmin have done a lot of work to try and prevent piracy of their, or more accurately Navteq's, mapping data. Despite my mapping be legitimately purchased for my StreetPilot I wasn't sure if my somewhat complex and hacky install method would be successful.

Well, I'm glad to say that it was. I'm not going to repost what I've written on Smelly Biker's site, read about it here.

PapaLazarou, using the method outlined in the thread linked to above I think you could write a 'gmapsupp.img' file to your card and get full European mapping on your Garmin.

Bumpkin, I`m in the same situation as you in that I too bought an American 2720 and following the same procedure as you, have for the past couple of years been using the full City Nav EU 09 maps. I`d like to upgrade to the latest set of 2011 EU maps, my question is........Did you manage to get all of the 2011 european maps onto your 2720 or as the coverage is increasing did you have to leave some countries off?

You can download mapping updates to your PC without loading them to the GPS (although you may have to have the GPS connected to trigger the process).

As you work through the update loader, there is an option button (bottom left) of window that appears at some point. From that you can choose to update the GPS, the PC or both.

No, sorry, not all of Europe will fit on now it's been expanded with stuff like junction view and 3D buildings which aren't used by the 2720 anyway

If you follow my link to the Smelly Biker thread in post #11 above you'll see what I did to get around this.

Basically I made another custom 'gmapprom.img' file with the areas I wanted keeping an eye on the total file size in Mapsource as I selected the mapping tiles. I kept it below 1.5GB which gave all the areas I'm likely to use. If I need other areas I'll just need to repeat this process as the full map set is on my PC.

I suspected as much really, but as you say you can upload different countries as you need them, I doubt I`ll ever take in one trip, say to Turkey that goes via Iceland and Norway! I don`t mind paying for the updates every couple of years just to get the extra POI and road changes.

You mention that the 765t has 4gb of memory as opposed to our 2gb, I wonder if this is to accomodate the extra 3D file for lane assist / 3D buildings etc?

Lifetime updates are now less than £50, hardly worth paying every year or two?

As does the Zumo 660, all of Europe won't fit onto the Zumo 550 either. However, with an SD card slot you can use that.
