Spent Wednesday setting my oil level to the max line prior to a quick trip to London today, came back and it's just below the min-
mark as shown in the handbook.
That 's a bit much even for a 320ish mile round trip.

Whats the possible cause.

(last stop before parking was 70ish miles for fuel and checked oil after 20mins .) bike has 21.6k miles on in.

same as all 4-strokes

rings not sealing to the bore:

not run in (properly)

less likely:

knackered bore

knackered rings

or

knackered valve guides

knackered valve guide seals

it leaks out

must be something about german engines. mrs cookie's VW TDI has just stopped using signficant oil at 60,000 miles. my TDI doesn't use any at 140,000 odd.

Oil levels on GS `s are sometimes tricky to get right consistantly,,
Always check the same way each time,.
I found that changing to semi-syth slowed my oil consumtion considerably,.

oil consumption

Short distance commuting might not help, don't know if you commute with the bike Bob?
As has been said before, always use the same method and routine to check your oil level to avoid false readings.
The way I check mine is to run it for 5 minutes (at least 2 clicks on oil temperature) switch off and park it on the centre stand, check the level after 5 minutes.
Mine uses a little oil (only 7500 miles) but it's going a lot further between top ups as the mileage increases;)
What type of oil are you using mineral or synth/semi synth?
If it's synth or semi, try switching to mineral at your next service and see if that helps,if the bike was run on synth or semi from a low mileage the rings may not have "seated" properly, worth a try
