I'm just trying to figure out whether I have something bent or misaligned on my centre stand.

Every centre stand I've used previously, once the stand is pressed to the floor the bike is held upright, even before it's lifted back onto the stand. What I seem to have is that the right-hand foot of the stand hits the ground before the left, meaning that holding the stand down with the foot makes the bike want to fall towards me. If I hold the bike upright and pull back, the bike goes onto the stand normally. Getting the bike off the stand is a bit more tricky too as once it comes off the stand, again it wants to fall towards me rather than resting upright.

Is this what they're like on the GS? Is it by design? :nenau

I don't really understand what you are getting at - the stand on this bike is pretty much the same as my previous 1200GS and the one before that, I have never noticed anything unusual about it.

That's because yours isn't bent, both feet should hit the ground together, in unison (but you'll defend the bike to the hilt)

Re-read what's he written, comprehension is the key;)

Here's a clue:P

Well it would make sense to me that once a stand is pressed down, the bike should stand upright on the four points of contact. That's what I've always had in the past. Because only one side of the stand touches down for me until the bike is heaved up, it falls towards me.

I didn't want to mention it to my dealer next time and him say "Ah, that's by design. To ensure the bike doesn't fall away from you, the stand ensures that until lifted the bike always has a tendency to lean towards to rider".

Make sense?

Last time I mentioned a "problem" to my dealer it was poor lacquer in places. Turns out it was the Datatag dots. I don't want to look that stupid again before 2014. :D

Hold bike upright and pull back... As that works for you, quite normally.

Push bike forward off center stand, keeping bike vertical.

It's probably explained in the owner's manual, if not your friendly BMW dealer will show you how.

PS Obviously check that one of the bolts retaining the stand hasn't fallen out (they do) or that some numpty previous owner hasn't bent the stand on Tesco's speed bump and / or when fitting the 'must have' standguard, without which no self-respecting 1200 GS is complete.

I noticed that centrestands on previous 1200GS/GSA's were not very good (don't forget BMW had to redesign the GS centre stand in late 2006) and it's not very clever on the F650GS Twin either.

When I rode a 12GS WC, I found the centrestand to be a bit uneven (IIRC) and quite hard to pull back to get the bike up onto it

Earlier 1100/1150GS's seem a lot better

The hardest to get onto the centre-stand was the 2005 model, the 2010 model was slightly easier, this WC is between the two, but really there is bugger all between the three models- I remember there being a lot of whinging about the first 1200 centre-stand in that it was hard for some people to 'get it up', but that has always been the way - some of us have the learning gene and some just whinge that the World is a difficult place for them and that it is always someone else's fault - such people should not ride motorcycles obviously!

Hmmmm maybe your stand is bent, not something I have noticed on mine - I am in Tempsford at the weekend, you could pop round and we could compare centre-stands.

I have put bikes on centre stands a million times in the past, but they've all stood up "on their own" once the stand is pressed down. The GS is the first one that always wants to topple towards me if I'm not holding it upright.

There is a certain amount of technique as with all bikes, but I consider this one a little precarious which previous bikes haven't been.

It doesn't sound like a feature to prevent the bike toppling away from you then, so I'll have to head out and compare it to some other bikes and see if something is a bit amiss with the stand installation on mine.

Engineer, thanks for the offer. If I'm around at the weekend I'll PM you. Otherwise I often head through St. Ives to ride the B1090 to the top of the B660 and then down to Grafham Water.

Have you put a spirit level across the frame with the seat off on a level surface??

I'm going with bent (steady) or possibly one side loose.

I read a thread somewhere else about how easy the WC is to get onto the centre stand. I can only agree with that as I managed to get my mine on with bare feet* the other day.

*I'm rock hard me.

I won't be in St.Ives at the weekend, I'll in Station Road, Tempsford - can you PM me if you are not a susbscriber?
