My new Odysey PC680 battery came a few days ago and I have just started to fit it.

I am a bit suprised that my PC680 is 3cm taller than my GS Standard and the petrol tank won't fit back.

Do I have to take the battery cradle out and replace/modify?

Researching here and on ADVrider most people say they were a direct replacement so I am somewhat puzzled.

My R1150GS is non-ABS and didn't come with Heated Grips (but I installed them later) and I am wondering if B£W installed different batteries.

Cheers

You have a picture of your tank not fitting?

When I put in my PC680, I had to shim the side of the battery with some cardboard from the box it came in to stop it from sliding from front to back.

The height was about a C-hair taller, but the tank fit on without an issue, even with some bent copper tabs for the electrical connections.

The solution was:

The battery cradle base was an elevated plaftorm on which the battery sat. After removing the tank I could undo the base plate that the battery cradle and ECU are attatched to. The left to right throttle cable goes underneath this plate in an attached tunnel, which makes it impossible to remove. However, by undoing each of the four mounting bolts it leaves just enough room to undo the three battery cradle base bolts (a ratchet spanner was a godsend here). The battery fitted in perfectly.

For the positive terminal I flatened the terminal with pliers. I turned the negative terminal stud bolt upside down and, using a small strip of metal with a hole at either end, connected it to the battery.

Simple really.

Although I do hate having to remove the tank as I have to drain it due to the absence of fuel line clips from my tool box (please Santa). With a five litre plastic container meant several trips to the car!

Replaced rear brake pads and fitted a hugger aswell today. So not a bad day but no riding. Shame.

I just wondered, because it seemed an awful lot of bother to go to just to fit a gel battery. I've just 'straight swapped' my original (2002) bmw battery for a new BMW gel battery - £81. That's without any discount or anything...

Use some small C-clamps or small vise grips to clamp the fuel lines. Or depending on your background, some heavy hemostats

Mike,

I bought mine from Motorworks for £71 as they are on sale (+P&P).

I reckon my original battery was smaller because the bike came without heated grips. I believe I would have had this problem no matter what I did, short of buying the OM replacement.

I also bought two service packs - buy one get the other at half price. Any one want to buy any fuel filters. :D

Flaps

Ps Where can you buy good service kits with out having to buy fuel filters??

PPS Where can I find the external fuel filter mod instructions??

Thanks for the advice Guzzler...

In the end I used a pair of Mole Grips, a pair of pliers and a helpful neighbour that had nothing better to then to stand in my cold garage for half an hour helping me. :D

I have no idea what hemostats are,:nenau Wrong background I suspect.

No problem Flaps.

Hemostats are medical clamps.

They can be rather large, and work well in many other situations. But they were really popular in the 60's and 70's for smoking "green" stuff

Now I have to admit I didn't know what a Mole Grip was till I looked it up. We call them Vise Grips on this side of the pond.

I'm due a 27000 mile service Flaps, and will need a filter.

Can't PM you as you'r in the secret service.
:)
