I had a 30A Varta on my R100GS PD, now I have installed a Odyssey PC680 because everyone says it is one of the best but this new baterry is 16A. Perhaps it would be the best battery for starting the engine but is it suitable for using heated handles and fog lights (Hella Micro DE)?

I have the OEM 280 watts alternator with a new rotor, a high output at low rev regulator and this substitute for the diode plate:

Accessories usage really depend on the output of the alternator / generator, all the battery does is get the power source for the generator etc rotating.

If you're worried about flattening the battery due to too many accessories you'd best get an ammeter fitted.

I don't know much about electrics..but I'd have stayed with the 30 amp Varta.

Varta, recommended by BMW...you know it makes sense ! :D

If BMW are getting their own parts made in China et all - and there are plenty of threads/posts on here - attesting to the lack of quality.................

Do you really think that they are putting the best battery available - in their bikes? :nenau

They will be putting the cheapest one possible, which will last a year.

Al :)

If you've got a choice stick with the bigger 30amp battery.

The only reason they used a the smaller 19amp on some twins was because of the space available.

Here is my view on this for what it is worth, My R80 lives on the street, all day, every day, cold, rain, snow, ice, that is how it is. I don't have a tridkle charge conditioner fitted, it just is as it comes. Two years ago when I got the bike I fitted a Varta gel type battery, bought from those nice people in Fareham as recomended by them. It still starts the bike today, it may be a little sluggish at first, but then the bike may not have been used for a week or two, but it will start.

When it does die, what do you think I will replace it with. Varta, not the cheapest, not the most expensive, but it does the job for me. :thumb2

Barden the battery people...
