oh crap!

OK, so one more post on this topic.

I’m glad you're getting it sorted and that the warranty is picking up the bill.

So for completeness, the last question to be answered on this thread is…Did you say:

A: ‘Whilst attempting to do an oil change on the rear-axel drive I had the back wheel off, and had the drive shaft dis-jointed from the rear-axel drive. I noticed metal shards and that the drive shaft looked worn, can you fix this under my insured warranty please.’

B: ‘I’ve noticed a ‘clunk’ can you investigate and replace any parts that need replacing under my insured warranty please’

I 'll eat a whole shop full of hats if its A.

bit of both really, told them that fd oil didnt need changing as i had recently done it,and that there was a clunk from the rear which i had had a look at and thought it was the drive shaft uj.would it have made a difference to the dealer if i told them what had happened,i really dont think so as its work for them and by any stretch of the imagination lowering the fd can not cause the damage to the uj,it either fits back on or it doesnt, but there is no need to cut my nose off so to speak is there?

my bike is fixed and is brill now, will this stop me doing my own maintinence tha i am perfectly capable of? no it wont as i beleive common sense will always prevail, only time will tell if i am proved wrong and if i am i will take it on the chin:rob

fair enough...

Nowm, where s that hat shop?

Devil in the details

Not to nit pick but as a lurker I was wondering what exactly the shop did to repair the FD. What parts did they replace. Did the FD bearings also need to be replaced?

I'm keen to know as I am looking at servicing my FD myself and it's handy to know the experience of others and which parts failed.

I was under the impression that the bike trade was the same as the car trade. And that it does not matter who or where the vehicle is serviced, just so long as the schedule is followed and genuine parts are used, then the company will honour the warranty agreement.

But I could be wrong.

With the BMW warranty your right but with the extended warranty your wrong as it specifically states the bike must be serviced by a BMW dealer. It isn't BMW that underwrites it and as has been said it is an external insurance policy. How this would stand up in court I don't know but that is the wording of the policy. They don't cover as much as the original warranty either. Other insurance warranties bought independent from BMW only state it must be a VAT registered bike mechanic. Presumably VAT registered so they can trace it and make sure it isn't home serviced.

Ok my bad, missing that UJ = Universal Joint. I just read that you were servicing the FD and missed the UJ.

Question still stands, though if it's too much trouble to answer I guess I can live with that...

What exactly did the shop replace? Do you have part numbers? I could have the same deal and I want to do it myself.
