In the clag again, found the crankcase broken at the back. Been to the local dealer who said its beyond repair but offered me a second hand 990 donk. The dealer stated that he thought it would be too difficult to fix. Does a 990 engine fit? would it run with carbs?

A friend of mine replaced his 950 engine with a 990 running on the original carbs. He reckoned it was an easy conversion and the bike ran very well. This was in a 950 Adventure.

I have read that getting a 990 engine to run on Carbs is a very complicated process, something to do with cam timing overlap which the FI deals with electronically. However I have no first hand experience of this. The chap above (Stroller) has a pal that did it easily

If it were me I'd do some research before buying the 990 engine!

Have a look at this

Well, thanks for answers. It would have been simple for me to do as I have the spare 950 engine to rob the bits from and the rest od the stuff is on the SM. The problem was the vendor did not want to sell the engine on its own, he wanted me to buy the whole wreckage and sell the parts I didn't need on flea bay. I chickened out and bought another 950 engine. I would have had trouble when I came to sell the bike on anyway. I have other stuff to sort out on the SM while the engine arrives to keep me busy.
