Started my 2 week trip around France and Spain today. So far ran out of petrol broke my mobile phone and the rear final drive is leaking like a bastard, I think it's just the seal as there's no play in the rear wheel bearings.

As luck would have it I'm staying with Nigel at Maison laudiere and he has the tools that we need - so question is do we need to replace it or can I just top it up as we travel about and hope for the best. My inclination is to fix it, otherwise I'll be chewing on about oil on tyres, final drive failure etc etc.

Any pointers or a guide to replacing the seal would be handy.

Many thanks.

Remove the rear wheel.
Clean the area around the seal.
Hook out the old seal.
Tap the replacement seal in place making sure it is the right way round and sits flush with the outer casting.
Refit the wheel
Road test and check for leaks.

That's a sh1t deal! There's no point in trying to keep going, pick out the seal (Steptoe's guide but with photo's missing);

and check the bearing, if all looks well just replace the seal and oil but if rivets are missing then it's going to be the bearing as well.

M/works or BMW should be able to get the parts to you in a couple of days so maybe just time to explore the area by bicycle or public transport and enjoy being a tourist :)

Hope this helps.

Mike.

Many thanks for your assistance folks. We ran up to the dealer in Caen on Wednesday for the seal and replaced it on thursday morning, it was much easier and more straightforward than I had expected. Today we are in Jaca south of the Pyrenees and it's been completely oil tight over a few days and 600 plus miles.

Special thanks to Nigel at maison laudiere who rang the dealer, ran us about for oil and stuff and even offered to drive us up to Caen on the Tuesday when the weather was absolutely atrocious which would have been a 130 mile round trip!

Nigel your a star - many, many thanks for your help.
