Oh my God its got a chain !

It is a 10 minute job
A paintbrush some paraffin and a rag !

Work the profane in to loosen all the grime and then with rag in hand round the chain just spin the wheel until its clean and shiny then apply fresh lube !

every 300 mile or so

as said i find it therapeutic and it really is an easy job

I might give that a go for fun, ta :)

Won't the solvent get past the O-rings and into the stash of grease in the roller that the O-ring is supposed to be protecting though?

Eventually yes but if you think about it anything that shifts the crap off the chain will have some sort of sovent in it and by the time parafin has done what you suggest the chain will be fecked anyway from use.

Many manufacterers recomend parafin as the cleaner of choice and as wapping points out there are specialist chain cleaners available at a price !

My logic says that a clean chain will last longer than a dirty un maintained one

JB will be along shortly with his tales of doom!:D

I thought that the idea was that the metal side plates no longer rub against each other so the dirt didn't matter :nenau

Chain cleaning and lubing is almost another what oil topic !

Maybe it does maybe it doesnt but again in my mind the less grime there is on and in the chain the less abrasive it will be and therefore life prolonging.
It isnt just the links to the chain there are the sprockets to take into account and if the rollers are clean and well lubed the sprocket will not wear away as fast and if the sprocket stays in better condition so does the chain

I cleaned mine last night, I hadn't realised it was gold :)

I do reckon though that it'd be cheaper to treat chains as disposable; £10 on a can of chain cleaner (nearly all gone), £12 on posh 'dry' lube and fecking ages spent cleaning the 'dry' lube off the rest of the bike 'cos there was no way of regulating the amount the can chucked out......

I think I may just go back to my usual regular application of a small amount of normal lube and the occasional wipe with a rag........

Did you use Paraffin, or normal chain cleaner? We need pictures!:D

Bloody hel;l Chain cleaner at £10 ...
Get some parafin its 6 quid for a gallon at B&Q and as for dry lube I am not a big fan as I believe it does not work well if it rains

PJ1 Blue label is my fave !

Chain cleaner this time but I think I'll use paraffin in the future as I used up a whole can (mind you it had a hell of a job to do!) - Pictures  I'll pop out later and take one just for you but be warned, it's not up to Nutty standards, I was content just to see my black chain become a vaguely gold chain :D

That's been my experience in the past too which is why I usually use just a good quality 'normal' chain lube, a little and often..............just thought I'd try a different brand and see (Silkolene Titanium Dri Gel).

God, I can't believe I've somehow got involved in a thread about chain lubes :blast :D

You'll be amazed at the results with Paraffin, even on an older chain. It's a job that I really wasn't looking forward to, but the Paraffin and paintbrush technique made light work of it. And it'll save you money.:thumb

I think that a "show us your chains" thread is on the cards

I've just ordered some of that, along with a big can of GT85 for cutting through any lithium grease/ wax/ chain lube from the bike. I'm using the new WD40 specialist stuff this time, so will see how it compares.

An amazing (if over detailed) insight into your life with your pork sword :D

Can you still buy parafin?

Feck ......chain cleaning with parafin is going back to the dark ages

Have you not seen these bikes with shaft drive yet, they're the future ;)

I hate chains (even though I have bikes with them)

See post #44

Yes you can still buy parafin and i thought that a man of your "keep it clean" mentality would appreciate the delights of chain cleaning :D
