Oh Shit! £££££££ ,😭

thats not so bad

arent they supposed to have double life of chain

I wouldn't know where to start changing the belt. Presumably a big job ?

it's not just the belt, the rear sprocket will need doing too . it has a sort of chrome finish on it and starts to flake , then it weakens the belt , then it snaps in a petrol station .
you engage gear quietly for once , start letting the clutch out and not moving . so you check you ARE in gear , and try again ?
still not moving , engage neutral , turn it off , get off , thinking WTF .
there is your belt lying on the floor ....in a straight line .

yes it's a big job .

Mate has Gates belts on his push bikes. Supposed to last 100,000 miles. First failed at 30,000 second 32,000. Not suprisingly he wasn’t happy as they had to be imported from the US. He thought it would be a fit and forget solution 🤔

do they have a special type of split link for these? when i worked downt pit, we used big fuck off staples for joining conveyor belts together. surely its the same principle

Nope, it's a continuous loop; look at that video clip a few posts up, and ponder the design 🙄

I think that your mate was extremely optimistic Steve.

I bought a bike with a Gates belt drive last year. I will be delighted if the belt lasts 30,000 miles. I've never heard anyone claim that they will actually last for 100,000 miles - least of all Gates...... :nenau

Tell your mate SJS stock Gates belts. ONLY the 122T out of stock........:beerjug:

Had Buells and Harleys for 25 years, never had to replace a belt.
Brother has had them for 15, had to replace 6!
We both have the same maintenance protocol...Who knows what is going on?

And even if you would have, replacing belts on Sportsters (tube frame Buell) are *much* simpler than on big twins.

I had nearly 70K on my twin Cam before the bikes demise. But I must admit, I checked the tension only but not the condition of the teeth.

I have had a quick feel of a third of the teeth so far. Need to get my lift under frame but lots show delamination.
Hopefully none have been lost. Whether as a quick fix, they can be rebonded for commuter riding before my new belt arrives.

This will cost me.
Just under 40K on a 2019 tourer and cracks showing at the teeth on many. Some are right through.
I've done three. Primary has to come off. Serious torque on the compensator nut to undo/redo it and a tool needed to wedge the primary chain.

if the cracks are only on one side of the belt then it looks like an alignment issue on the rear wheel.

I've always put a pair of new pulleys on when I've changed the belt.
