I scratched the itch and bought a 5k miles 2019 x-adv750.
I know it's not as great as the later ones, but budget dictates.
That said, wow, and wow again, what a fun low power 90 mph comfy scoot / ped / bike. A real smile on your face job.
A really big question as to if the 1200gs is required now ,😞

Well, in answer to the ‘what have I done’ question, I’d say you may have found the holy grail. The whole of Europe is on to them, I don’t know why we in the UK are so far behind.
 
It looks great, I see lots of them around in Spain. I went from a well sorted GS to the ADV 350 mainly because of the weight difference and the sheer usability of a mid sized scooter as I get older.

Because most British bikers put vanity before sanity and think ‘scooters’ are beneath them .
You only have to read in here how many state ‘ they’re not ready for a scooter yet ‘.
Utter vain , insecure bollox .
As you say , they’re all over Europe whilst the cockwombles over here buy something that really isn’t them and use 30% of the power just to conform.

Scoots are great .
Took my TMax to south of France via the Vercors.
My ADV350 went to the Peak District (from Guernsey) and I’m taking my X-ADV on 2500 mile trip over Pyrenees and Alps this May.

I will look forward to hearing how you get on in The Pyrenees this year on it. We are booked to do the Pico's this July - 1 GSA , 1 RT, 1 GS, and 2 1200 tigers - We have a little Welsh siting trip in May - I may well take the x ADV on that one, and if all goes well it could be the Euro bike too - which means the GS will be surplus :(
 
I bumped into the owner of an X-ADV 750 last year who was over from Ireland, touring England, Scotland and Wales. He laughed about the poor conditions he'd ridden through praising the bikes weather protection and all day comfort.
He said it's one of the best touring bike he's owned.

That looks a lot of fun. Once the new bike novelty has worn off it will be clearer whether you need or want to keep both. After owning the same 1200GS for 20 years I am seriously starting to think do I still need it. I don't think I want a big scooter but certainly a more lightweight bike

A scooter will be beneath me when I next change my bike. It will be either a TMAX or an X-ADV. I need to try both. I no longer want 100bhp. I've never really needed it. Comfort is key. I ride from Dorset to Norwich 2-3 times per year, a 600 mile weekend, do a 2 week trip most years and a few rides to test matches in Birmingham, Nottingham or Leeds. The arsenal range needs to be greater than the tank range.

Both bikes have their supporters. I like the xtra oomph of the Honda and the funky styling. I like the belt drive on the Yamaha and that it is more of a scooter than the crossover Honda. It also has a heated seat and I'm a soft southerner. It looks to have better weather protection and more equipment too. Decisions, decisions. Test rides will be arranged when the weather allows.

I’ve had both though not done a long trip on the X-ADV…..yet. To be rectified in May.
The TMax is easier to just jump on and ride but I prefer the X-ADV as the DCT box is far more fun, especially in manual mode and is more like a normal bike and more involving . It’s also about £4k cheaper .

The price difference is a factor, but comfort is a greater one following my broken back. Your review in May will possibly be too late as I hope to get things sorted before then, but I'll still be interested to hear your opinion. I'm not sure what the point of manual mode is. Hi. I 'think' using manual mode would allow you to hold a gear going around a twisty, without the dct deciding mid turn to shift. Just another option if you fancy it I think.
 
Both the X-ADV and the TMax are quite heavy, the X-ADV is the taller of the two if seat height is a consideration.
 
I traded an R1 for a Tmax.

Initially the Tmax felt very underwhelming (compared to a litre sports bike), but once my brain and throttle hand were recalibrated to the new bike I found it could really get a lick on without the silly speeds that get you jail time. The practicality of a twist-n-go with ample underseat storage and a top box speaks for itself.

A super-scooter just takes a day of riding to become accustomed to if you have never owned one. I'm a massive fan now.

DON'T GRAB THE CLUTCH !!! (.....you will, just the once !) ;)

Does there have to be a point ?
Manual mode in DCT gives you more control and adds to the fun . If you just want a twist and go then get a TMax or similar .
Having fun is optional 😜

My Burgman has manual mode, sport mode and automatic (drive) mode, and I’ve yet to find a use for manual mode. I use sport mode for overtaking but usually just leave it in drive. I think, if I were riding up something like the Stelvio Pass I may put it into manual, just to be able to keep the power constant in the hairpins. Other than that :nenau
