Hi Folks,

The oil temperature reading and fuel gauge on the RID of my 2002 R1150GS have been playing up since I replaced the fuel filter as part of a service before christmas. The fuel gauge was not reading and the oil temperature gauge was reading low even though the engine was up to temperature. I got both working if not reliably following the restrictions below.

Today I thought I'd have another go at getting everything working properly again I cleaned and dressed the tank connectors and cleaned the 8 pin gray connector block beneath the tank that deals with the oil temperature. I had to take the black connector block above this off to get at it. I connected everything up again and the fuel gauge and oil temp gauge are reading correctly. However, Now the gear indicator reads 2nd in 1st 2nd in Neutral (though the neutral light comes on) 3rd in 3rd and 6th in 4th 5th and 6th.

Full disclosure I didn't disconnect the battery before messing with the connectors (I know I should have). So what have I broken and any ideas how to put it right? Many thanks.

have you a chafed wire on the loom going from under the tank, over the headstock to the display. This used to be a regular occurrence a decade ago when I had an 1150 as the factory put too much tension in the harness and releasing a few cable ties fixed the problem. The insulation would wear through and short to the headstock. The fault would vary, depending on which wire was affected.

The Gear indication on the RID is just switched earths from the gear selector switch. Depending on which of the 3 input lines to the RID get an earth will depend on what value is displayed.

It might be worth cleaning the RID connectors again. As a good rule of thumb, breaking and making the connector several times can be sufficient to remove corrosion and provide a good contact.

Though as the value changes with gear selection, even though it’s incorrect. I would be looking at the selector switch first.

Because you are dealing with switched earths, corrosion on connectors can throw up some strange anomalies. Particularly where there is very small current flow as in the Gear indication. Pins 1, 2, 3 and 4 on the grey RID connector are gearbox switched earths.

Thanks guys I'll go through the wiring again. Thought I may have fried something since I didn't disconnect the battery. At 21 it's wiring is getting on a bit.

As you’re diving under the tank again to the RID connector, you could try this.

Gear selector switch test from RID Connector.

No power required from the bike as tests are for earth switching. Disconnect the main wiring harness connector at the RID connector and test for continuity at the following pins.

Set up multimeter in Ohms and connect one lead to a good earth the other lead goes to the pins in turn. Eg. With bike in Neutral all 4 pins should read short circuit.
In 1st gear pins 1,2 and 4 should read short circuit only pin 3 should reading Open circuit.

You will notice that Pin 4 is a constant ground from the gearbox, so you only really need to test pins 1,2 and 3

It might help you with your fault diagnosis.

Thanks Ian. Thats really helpful. Since I only have a 2nd 3rd and 6th gear indication it looks like pin 2 will be open on neutral 1st 4th and 5th. I'll get a look at it this afternoon with the multi-meter. Again many thanks.
