Just changed the oil and filter on my 1989 R100GS before heading for Spain tomorrow morning - leaving at 9am.

Went for a 20 mile or so test ride as I've done the valve clearances, gearbox and final drive oils as well. When I got back the oil pressure light came on at tickover and the oil cooler is cold. Filter was supplied with the black square section O ring only, original BMW part.

So what have I done wrong/left out? I've done this job loads of times and never had an issue before.

Just a suggestion but can you give the old filter a bit of a rinse then refit that to see if it's a filter fault as that's the only thing you've changed. Presuming all was well before the service, check o ring at same time.

Have yer fitted the right filter as the none oilcooler filter is a bit shorter
Have yer filled it and just before that replaced the sump plug = He He

Air lock in the cooler ? If so I think you need to remove the bolt you should see there, replace it with a 6mm bolt but only fitting it loosely, remove your spark plugs and turn the engine over until the ignition lights go out...this should push the air out. Replace plugs and bolt in cooler and try again.

Sounds like the various O-rings or shim put back in the wrong order?
Or as stated, used the wrong filter.
I hate replacing the oil filter as it can all go a bit wrong

Thanks for the replies.

I dropped the oil into a nice clean container and took the filter cover off. Checked the filter against the old one and it's the same, so as the cover didn't seem to push on the filter I removed the paper gasket as suggested on the Gunsmoke site. This means the cover compresses the outer O ring to make a seal so I don't really know why the gasket was needed. It also means the square section O ring seals better against the end of the filter forcing the oil up into the cooler.

Put the oil back, fired her up and within seconds the oil cooler was heating up and even when hot no oil pressure light even at the very low tickover speed I've set.

We'll see how it goes tomorrow - I'm sure it'll be fine:beerjug:

just out of interest do you need an oil cooler on a naked airhead ? just wonderd i did ponder getting rid on my naked rt ,but as i have the moorespeed top end i kept it

Well, the old girl made it with ease. 900 and odd miles in 4 days - more motorway than planned due to the pressing schedule.

I stick to 75 mph. French motorways can be quite bendy and I find if doing 80 plus on knackered TKCs you can a get a bit of a weave on.
