Well ,feeling slightly better today, so I thought I better get on with getting the RT fired up. Checked I was getting a spark and that the oil was being pumped up to the heads, all OK. I tried to set the static timing but gave up reasoning that it should fire up as the bean can can only move so far. Juice in and press the tit. Bugger, battery a bit flat..... Cuppa and a sleep whilst charging and then the bugger fired up , bit rough at first but I got the timing light on it qand found it was firing about tdc, so retarded. loosened off the bean can and turned it against the rotation, S timing came into view but still too far retarded even though the bean can was turned as far as it would go. Reved up to 3000 and same with the Z mark which was still below the timing mark.
Soooo how do you move the timing further? The slot in the bolthole is only so long and I have turned it as far as it will go.
It is at least running now so time to sort out the carb balance, maybe tomorrow.

It's easy to do Tony....
Someone :augie sold Rob Farmer one with timing out 1 tooth :hide

It was the blue marker pen they used because the engine sprocket was so worn the timing mark had worn off that caused the problem...quite surprising on a one careful owner from new low mileage replacement engine :augie

:D

Having got the engine running the other day I set to with the carbtune. got her running quite well though ticking over a wee bit fast, just under 100 revs, will so9rt that later after Ive ridden her. Anyway boxed the job up with the front cover and fairing then spent a few hours cleaning and polishing, did'nt realise how much overspray had found its way under the dust sheet, anyhoooo, today I decided to fire her up again, nothing, nada, shit. after a while found no spark, front off again, pain on an RT, and found that I had managed to trap the wire from the beancan between the engine and front cover. how stupid:blast soted it out with soldered joints and as I had the beancan off I had a look at the slots, one was well and truly clogged up with 20 years of corrosion and crap and clearly stopping the can from turning as far as it should. cleaned it up with a drill and file, slotted the lot back together and fired up first kick. Timing light out again and this time I got all the marks lining up nicely, So you see sometimes the cloud does have a silver lining:aidan
anyway she is now looking good and running very nicely, cant wait now to have a ride.

Hi..I,m back. The bike was sorned and as I want to take it to the week-end, I had decided to tax it again from this month. Then of course realised the mot is due. went out today to check everything in readiness for the test tomorrow, everything had been fine but of course sods law says something will not work. In this case dip beam. everythin else is fine. obviously a bulb so headlamp unit out and new bulb fitted. still not working. Bulb tested and OK. The wiring had not really been disturbed at the front end but I got the tank off and waggled a few joints. Hooray!! headlamps work. .... Shite, brake light not working. buggered about a bit longer, Brake light now fine but indicators now iffy, how does all this shite happen. Anyway obviously probsw with the joints so now all sorted and everything working as it should.

Amazing how small things can cause a few hours of work.
Anyway. MOT tomorrow then WEEK_END:bounce1

Well I suppose this is the end of this thread... Today I went and MOT'd the bike. Have to say I was a bit nervous as I have not ridden for almost a year due to my chemo etc. I am just comming out of my "shit week " so am still pretty weak, I was'nt sure how I would fare. About half a mile of rather careful riding and I began to feel more confident, the bike rides and handles beautifully and it was'nt long before I felt as if I had never been off it. Sailed through then MOT with no adverse comments so really chuffed.
So was it worth it. Financially I dont suppose it makes too much sense as I dont suppose its value has increased too much. As an excercise, it has been great. good therapy and very enjoyable in those winter months and then beauty with these bikes is the simple nature of a rebuild like this. unless you are going to try and create something different or get involved in the depths of the engine/ gearbox/ electrics, it is a fairly simple spannering job with plenty of help and advice and a ready supply of parts
Now what shall I do next..... Oh yeah, Ive got Flips Zundapp combinette in the loft.. :blast
See you at the weekend

Good stuff Pastyman. Bikelooks good:thumb2

I find beavering away on projects great therapy for the soul- until you break something expensive:D

Hi Pieman :D

I had the exact same electrical problems and all down to the connectors and that silly little fuse box they have under the tank :blast

Been wiggling and pulling connectors like crazy and now everything works....for the moment. Going for a MOT this Thursday so fingers crossed. If it is MOT and Taxed will take the RT down on it's maiden run to the weekend :thumb2

Will be asking you loads of questions about paintwork so be ready :D

This has moved into my garage, it's suffered a bit over the time it's been standing, but that's all in hand, spent the day cleaning and re painting parts of the bike and repairing the centre stand, engine sounds sweet though!:friday
