I found a set of Ohlins that came up for sale on eBay very late at night.
They didn't show the model number, but they were for a GS/GSA. I looked long and hard at the pictures and noticed the rear had the piggy back reservoir, which I knew to be much more expensive. They were buy it now, and I knew they wouldn't be there long at the price so had to make a quick decision. I also knew if I got it wrong I could easily sell they on without losing any money.

They came today.
BM606 the spring is 00698 - 59/150 L058,
BM607 - 01096 -12-56 L108
In great nick.

Here is my dilema:
After a little research they are listed as for the ADV. (I have an 05 GS). I aslo found out from a post over at ADV that they make the bike slightly taller and the side stand needs a shim to extend it. I am 6'3" so no problem with the height, and I'm sure I can get around any side stand issues.
Would you guys fit them or sell them on? (I really, really want to fit them :) )

Next dilema - Fitment:
I am quite competent mechanically, and fitting these are not rocket science. My main concern was the bolts being seized. I have read everything I can find, and the consensus is soak in Plusgas and apply some heat to melt the loctite that is sometime applied. I have been soaking the bolts every night so I am hopeful there.
Should I give it a crack?

Next dilema - Set Up:
i am a big unit....... Just over 125 kg, but losing weight fast, by June I will have shed another 10Kg which matches the standard spring. I never carry a pillion. My riding is more about making progress than any super hero stuff. I usually travel light except for a couple of weekends camping and the annual pilgrimage away.

Should i stay with the springs fitted? Or do I need to change them?
Is it worth taking the bike to a suspension specialist and ask them to set it up for me? Or even fit and set up?

I have blown the budget big time and I am officially skint, so i do not want to spend anymore than I have to. However, there is no point fitting these if I cannot get the best out of them because they have the wrong spring rates or badly set up.

Any constructive views are welcomed here, it's good to get others perspective. I asked my missus what she reckoned. She says she likes the yellow springs and shiny gold, they look nice......:blast

The stand can be sorted easily with a hockey puck and a couple of nuts 'n bolts, or one of the many camel toe side stand extenders around.

Personally, I'd fit them, try it out for feel and see if it suits your weight/riding style.......if you find it's an improvement (and you probably will) then you could sell the OEM shock here or on ebay.......you could even have it reconditioned to 'as new' condition pretty cheaply.

Sounds like you're suffering from buyer's remorse.....don't :rob

Repeat after me......

It's my bike and I deserve it....It's my bike and I deserve it....
It's my bike and I deserve it....It's my bike and I deserve it....

PS yes you could have it set up by some so-called expert, but chances are, you'll get good enough advice here for free.....fit it and see how it feels :thumb2

i've done a few now, and the bolts always seem to come out with no prep. they do give a most disconcerting "crack" when they give though :D

there's a guide i did here, that walks you through it :)

Cookie: Cheers, I have read that guide 20 times. I know it word for word now. It is top drawer. Nice one.

Give all the bolts a blast of WD40 a few days before.
You can use copper grease on the bolts going in.
It sounds like they will be spot on for you straight out of the box.
Let us know how you get on and post a few pic's

I would suggest at least having them serviced, I am guessing if you never really ride two up swapping the spring is not so important and the range of adjustment for damping and pre-load should allow for a nice feel to them (certainly much better than stock)

Try MCT for servicing, they should also be able to advise on setup & Spring (And may be able to do a spring on an exchange basis if you really want / need one)

Thanks for the MCT recommendation.

+1 :thumb2 for Revs....great guys and really know what they are doing....also worth asking them for a fitting cost as well.

Looking at the shocks they look the dogs and at a good price.

Enjoy.

Why service first.? it takes 5 minutes to fit them. Get them on and enjoy. If they need a service then you'll feel it. (if they look unused then they probably are)
Seeing as you are a large chap, like most of us :Dconsider fitting 180's at the next service. (assuming they are 140's now) get them set up better if you feel like it then.

I couldn't believe the difference in changing from oem.

Been on phone to FTR this morning and found out what I had spring wise. They recommend +1 on front spring and +2 on rear. "'cos I'm a fat b*****" Waiting for the springs to come, they will fit the springs and set them up for my fatness. Then I'll whack 'em on. Just need to sort out the stands, but no hurry there.

I just fitted the K&N & Wunderlich PC to go with the decat pipes & GPR can. It is so different I cannot believe it. Lifts the front on the power under hard acceleration. I didn't expect that! Once the Ohlins are on it will be a serious bit of kit

Appreciate all the input fellas.
I just pray she don't find any receipts.......

Ohlins!

These used to be my springs mate. I recently sold my 2007 GSA including the Ohlins to a guy from Sunderland but he just couldn't cope with the height. Original boxes, spanner and literature went with the bike. He e-mailed me back to say that he'd had standard GS springs fitted and presumably sold these on to the garage who'd fitted his new springs. Anyway, the reason for this is to say that these were set up for me by Daren of MCT Stowmarket. I'm around 14st and always carried panniers and top box so probably an equivilent of 15+ stones. I doubt that the guy who bought the bike from me altered the settings so this should give you some idea of a starting point. The springs were great for me and carried me around approx 20 countries or more. You've got a bargain at around one grand less than the original price. Enjoy!:thumb

It's a small world :)
Daren at MCT has just fitted a 170 rear and 60 front spring. OMG. What a massive difference it makes. Pot holes? What are they? Stays on line no matter what surface you go over. Without doubt the best mod I have ever made to any bike. Still have a couple of small issues though :augie

The bike is VERY tall. I pulled up alongside a HGV yesterday and made eye contact with the driver :D

The sidestand angle is a bit extreme (see pics) The 2nd picture has a hockey puck underneath it, not convinced this will be enough.

Been in touch with the company who make the side kicker extending stand. He recommends a GSA version, but the earlier GS models are not compatible for some reason. So that may be no good. http://aksengineering.com/sidekicker

I might have to have a piece welded into the stand if no other solution. Any recommendations for someone who can do this?
