Are all 100gs models supposed to have an oil cooler? ive got an 88 model with no oil cooler and thought that it was one of the main differances to the 800? please someone tell me that not all 1000cc bike had them

Early R100gs ( the ones with proper indicator switches ) never had them.

What would the "Gurus" Reckon , A Bigger Sump or an Oil cooler ?

If it's your standard bike Phill I'd leave it as it is unless you're going off road. It's been fine as it is for the past 20 odd years.
Ideally both with a thermostat fitted to the cooler. But if I had to choose one it would be the oil cooler mainly because it increases the oil capacity slightly as well as providing cooling.

Just to be contrary
I've read the opposite. Put the pan on as you get the increased capacity and on cold days, if there isn't a thermostat fitted, you don't over cool the oil and then suffer emulsification of the oil.Down side of the bigger oil pan is the reduced ground clearnace though
BTW I have an 88 R100GS, no oil cooler fitted, but went the bigger pan. If you're paranoid about the temperature of the oil, get one of the dipstick gauges.

Mine did when I got it and so does Jaythro's L'Escargot
My Jan '89 (so its really an '88 model) 100GS has an oil cooler and the 'dangly' orange plastic indicator switch.
What do you call a "proper Indicator Switch" then Kenny (I initially thought you meant the pre-three paddle indicator switch bikes) ?
(Three paddles are great, I love them, I think BMW have ruined the 2009 models by using single lever switches

I am not an expert on oil coolers etc but I was looking at the same for my 80g/s. I spoke to someone who knows
and was recommended the oil pan extender or extended sump rather than the oil cooler [the only downside is the reduce height]. Apparently on fitting the thermostat, it is quite close to the exhaust down pipe and could affect the temperature control performance.Hope this helps

Yup - That's what I've got.
I don't have an oil thermostat though.

Fair enough, which bike did you use? I would be wondering about the thermostat, what was the air temp?
I am going to stick with the advice given to me, two reasons. Firstly the advice cameJrespected individual and secondly its a cheaper option
100GS,and hot enough to fry yer brains.
Bike ran perfectly.In my opinion,do you need an oil cooler for normal use?
