Well my 1150gsa made it to France, but gave up just before making it to the beaches!

Didn't feel right so I pulled off the motor-way, as I was slowing I herd a large clunk from the rear end and the bike went wobbly, at first i thought a blown tyre, but upon inspection there was oil flowing from the rear hub onto the wheel and pooling underneath.

So guys any idea what's gone wrong and what I'm gong to have to to to get her back on the road?

Bike is currently still in France and will be about two weeks before it is repatriated by my recovery company. (Best £22 i've ever spent!) But I'd like to get an idea of the issue before it returns!

Sounds like the big bearing and seal is fecked, steppers did a how to change somewhere,do a search :thumb2

You may be able to borrow or buy a second hand one, whilst yours get replaced, many people keep spares as its a weak point. :augie

Rear drive

New bearings and seals are not expensive, brought both from
Motobins in 2007 think about £16 for both. not hard to do see Mr Steptoes sticky. dave gs.

Bearing is £35 .

Surprisingly the cheapest place to get the bearing is at a BMW main dealer. Don't always assume the aftermarket suppliers are the cheapest, you'll be surprised in a lot of instances.

As said, fairly easy repair (parts, bearing and seal under £50).
Worth taking the bevel box off and getting a dealer or independent to fix.
When was the bevel oil changed last?.
It looks emulsified;which may have contributed to the failure.

Hi,
Thanks for the input, I feel much happier now. I had thoughts of my whole final drive being completely screwed.
Oil was changed just before I got the bike in August. Around 5000 miles ago (bike now on 58k).
I'll get a look at the bearings when the bike gets back in two weeks.
How would one go about replacing the bearings? If its an easy job do I really need to take it to a specialist?

.

No need to remove the whole bevel when changing the bearing. I prefer the whole bike in and just take the bevel cover off.

That's interesting. I've not seen a post regarding this before. Are there any early warning signs? Or a rough mileage?

Giggling loudly, never seen it before, anyway even in Africa BMW main dealers, best price and the only ones holding the right C3 tolerance ones... never even hadto change the seal caught in time.

The old girl an 09.09.1999 model is with a buddy in Bavianskloof tonight, replaced the bearing at around 50k she will be due soon for another, 100k is coming up, not an issue at about GBP 50 every 50,000 km,s?
