oil filler cap leaking

I need help on this one.

the oil filler cap on my 1150gs is leaking. she has done 55k. I have replaced the o-ring seal that goes on the black plastic oil filler cap. Even if i wipe everything up clean off the all the oil on the outside of the filler cap and cylinder head it will be soaking wet again within miles. im gettin really peeved off with this having placed a fairly standard part that fails - an o-ring.

Has anyone else had this problem and what have they done to cure it. I want my bike to be perfect as possible and this annoyance is doing my head in.

oil leak

change complete plastic insert ( just pulls out) when fitting new one , just smear a little silicone sealant round the seal and let it set for 10 to 15 mins before use

Just change the 2 o rings for the proper size not what you think it should be! I prefer Rubber grease or vaseline to help them seat

What I think happenes is that the engine breathin ( don;t believe me watch the throttle bodies at idle!) and it just wears away the o ring outer and makes a flat spot which it then starts blowing oil out

Or you can do what motoscot says and do the insert but I find that the 2 o rings work!

you obviously have a serious engine problem , sell the bike immediately , DO NOT ride it , it may detonate without warning ..

Not always as simple as that.

I used a few new inserts, caps and O rings, but mine still leaked.

As motoscot states a thin smear of sealant on the inside of a cleaned rocker cover and allowed to cure 'cured' the leak in the end.

This was my experience too. New O rings and plastic insert but the rings still needed the help of some blue gasket sealant to stop leaking.

have you just done an oil change or topped it up and over-filled it?

it can leak from there if you do that.

I havent done an oil change. oil now just comes out the side of the filler cap and down the cylinder head. she's getting an oil change this w/end along with other serviceables

another area to check is the box where excess oil gets vented to.

On the left side of bike (as if sitting on it) get on your hands and knees and look up toward roughly where the front and rear seats meet up and is part of the air filter box assembly. You will see a small plastic screw, gently unscrew this. If oil comes out then a sure sign of over-filling; if not then it's back to the inserts for the filler cap.

If you do this hold a container under the screw as useally quite a bit comes out.

I have an oil leak from the filler cap as well.

I have bought two oil seals as that is what the dealer said I required. It was obvious where the smaller of the two seals goes (Inside the removable cap).

Where does the larger seal go. Becuase it fitted I ended up fitting it over the the smaller of the two. But I guess this isn't right as it leaks worse than ever now.

Do I need to pull out the inner plastic unit (The bit thats in the engine that the cap screws into) and put the seal underneath. And if so does this inner bit of plastic come out in a certain way? IE screw it clockwise or anti clockwise or just pull it out.

Any help appreciated.

The insert just pulls out, just go steady with a screwdriver or even a finger and it will just pop out, I use a smear of silicone on them too

Stewart thanks for the advice. Now all swapped over. The old insert O ring was full of crap so no wonder it leaked.
