My bike has developed an oil leak at the alternator drive.

I noticed when doing my service a week or so ago that the sponge behind the cover was very oily, but didn't think any more of it. I removed the sponge and after a ride today I noticed fresh oil coming from the bottom of the cover, leaving a coating on the front of the sump and making the upper surface of the bash plate oily. The inner surface of the alternator belt is a bit oily too.

It had a new front cover not long ago at the dealers, as a result of corrosion - perhaps it's been weeping since then.

(Grasping at straws mode ON) Could this be a result of over-filling with engine oil? Checkign the level this evening it does seem very full. And if I reduce the oil level, might it stop weeping? (Grasping at straws mode OFF)

Any sensible suggestions welcome...

..........looking on the bright side, the covering of oil should stop the cover from corroding again :)

Something I smiled about when I took the plastic cover off and saw the oil! :D Looking at the Repair Manual DVD, it seems like a tricky job requiring special tools, but doesn't require removal of the engine cover itself.

So, may not be too expensive. This must have happened to someone else from here - any idea of the cost of replacement? I have put a call into my friendly local independent mechanic ...

oil leak

take it back to the dealer. should have had a new seal with new cover and therefor should be covered by parts warranty at least. ( if not bike warranty).
why should you have to pay for it to be fixed when it was dealer fitted?

Thanks, Foggy. I phoned the dealer (Cooper Tunbridge Wells) and they trotted out "oil seals can fail at any time..." so I popped over there today (if "popped" covers a 100-mile round trip) and spoke to the Service Manager who's agreed that is should indeed be covered under the 'parts supplied' warranty. It'll get done in a couple of weeks time.

Also sailed through its first MOT this morning. The chap doing it commented that it was in such good condition because it hadn't done many miles, which I thought was a little harsh at 24,000. He wouldn't believe that there wasn't a decimal point in the mileage.

A lovely warm day here today (summer gloves :)) so the ride was no hardship and has once again convinced me that despite the faults, I still wouldn't swap it for anything else.

(Also called in today to see Brian Giles (BGM) to complete the 24,000 service. I can't rate his helpfulness highly enough. Anyone looking for an independent mechanic in Kent or East Sussex need look no further!)
