Having re-assembled the Adv, I took it out for a ride this afternoon (first time this year - brilliant!). On my return I noticed there is a fairly significant oil leak from the filler cap on the LHS rocker cover.

As part of the work done on the bike, both rocker covers were repainted. In order to do this, I'd removed the filler cap and its 'filler pipe' (part No 5 in the diagram). When replacing the filler pipe, I examined the fit and saw it was held in place by a broad O ring (6) which sat in a machined groove in the rocker cover. This was clean, had not been painted and the pipe fitted very snugly into it.

The filler cap's O ring seems to be in good condition (it was new about 30k miles ago), so I reckon the leak is from the filler pipe. Should I have used some gasket goo or something similar when refitting it in the cover??

Mike,

When my filler cap pulled out No. 5 with it, I just pushed it back into place. I kept an eye on it thinking that it might start to leak. Apart from a little misting at first, it has been ok without any jism to seal it.

It's that powder coating you used, should have used rattle can -no leaks so far, but seriously I just refitted it without and gasket goo or owt with no problems, you may have nipped the O ring or something if you let a rough aarse scotsman do the job??

DONT USE GOO, NONONO

It will warm up and cool down break up and wash down into your oil system, settle in the strainer, affect pressure, you know the rest.

Take out current ring, check it over, coat in oil (as you would your oil filter), replace - see how you go.

If it's still no good, get a new o ring.

Remember NO GOO

Thanks all - new O rings ordered - thought I'd go mad and spend the £1.80.

Always been impetuous...

Mike:)

Hmmm...

...replaced both O rings, ensured the seat in the cover was clean, oiled both O rings before fitting - it still leaks.

Any other ideas?
