OK all you clever people, I found an oil leak today and it's somewhere above the left cylinder head. Not sute it's a lot of oil and probably looks a lot worse than it is. I aseem to recall a thread on here a few weeks ago regarding something similar but I can't locate it.

Any ideas anyone? Yes I know the bike is dirty, I'm in Alaska..........:thumb

I think the old girl is telling me she needs to retire from these tough trips after this one....:( She's done me proud though.

When they go the amount of oil lost is usually very little, it just goes a long way

it cant be the oil pressure switch,as its on the top on the right hand side of the bike, the op says his leak is on the left ,check the base head and rocker cover gasket, also the oil seal behind the bottom pulley, also worth a look is the oil cooler pipe that goes from the bottom of the lhs of the engine up to the oil cooler, it could be running down that pipe from up above .my guess would be the oil seal behind the bottom pulley .

also the clips that hold the rubber part of the pipe to the oil cooler pipe are shite they are a click type snap fit, maybe a jubilee type would be better.

I stand corrected but could have sworn the switch was on the l/h side on my old 1200

Yes, it's on the top right, but you'll find the oil runs down the lefthand side of the engine due to the bike being put on the side stand. :thumb2

It could be the crank position sensor. Mine leaked due to corrosion in the front engine cover completely hidden away and inaccessible behind the alternator belt cover.

Quick strip down in a Canadian hotel car park revealed the oil pressure sensor washer to be badly corroded. Couldn't find another or anything to fit so cleaned the washer and all the surfaces with emery paper and back together in an hour. The very ingenious Rob Gawthorpe made a further seal with a narrow length of black gaffer tape which did the trick.

Job number 87 out of "the things to do to get out of the shit whilst on the road" manual. *

Pity about the huge thunderstorm which hit half way through the process but at least it washed those bits of the bike that never see daylight!!

* Should not be read by those who think 1200's are made of swiss cheese or can only be looked at by a dealer in case their warranty is void.

SHEESH it was a bit dampish tae say the least :D

You are confusing the oil TEMPERATURE sensor which sits atop the RH side of the engine with the oil PRESSURE sensor which is on the LH crankcase.

So Steptoe was wrong and I was right after all!

A new career awaits. Independent servicing of Hexheads, you know who to call :D

Wow, you had to strip a lot of the bike off to get to the switch.

Anything on top of the bike demands all bodywork and petrol tank taken off. You 'might' get away leaving the beak in place but probably not. For the ultimate Mad Max look the bike can be used with all all bodywork removed.

Though not without the fuel tank ;)
