Oil leak.

Shit me again sorry.
Out for a blast this evening all going good. Met the guy who looked after my GSX-R walking his dog. Having a long chat with him and he spotted oil leaking onto bash plate. When I got back had a look and can see there is oil seeping out from what looks like a black ring beside a hex nut under engine just above the bash plate. No oil on tyre or other parts of bike and not leaving a pool yet. This was not leaking when I brought bike to BMW for service and alternator belt replacement. I cannot describe this better as not sure what part of engine this is.
Sorry to bother you GSER'S again but any ideas.

Possible leak 1
The crank position sensor sits on top of the engine front cover just under the alternator. Its a common area for corrosion and that can lead to leaks. The fix is to have the cover removed stripped painted and its good to go for a few more years. Oil leaks down the engine sides to puddle in the bash plate.

Possible leak 2
The oil level window seals sometimes leak again check for alloy corrosion under the paint. But it might simple be a bad window seal.

Possible leak 3
Spilled oil from an oil change has not been cleaned up properly or the sump plug is leaking.

Thanks Bendy, I think it is back further in as oil is seeping onto back of bash plate. not oil level window or sump plug as it seems to be coming from two small round holes beside each other. One has a hex bolt and other looks blank with a black like ring in it.

It's the oil cooler return pipe nut. Try tightening it.
If it still leaks then the washer needs replacing. Same size as the sump plug washer.
If you have to remove the nut you can remove it without draining the oil, there maybe a spoonful of oil in the pipe.

Thanks for that Steptoe. I followed the oil cooler return pipe and there is no oil from around the nut. I checked other side and no oil around fixing. It seams oil is coming down from somewhere above back of sump which is collecting on back of bash plate.Had a good look with torch this evening. I have searched the web but have not come across anything yet. I am Puzzled mate.

A common source of leaks from the upper engine area is the oil temperature sensor. A leak here allows oil to puddle atop the engine which then flows down when on the side stand.

It's easy to check, look at the engine top above the RH cylinder and telelever and you'll see the temp sensor. If it's oily you'll need to replace the ally washer beneath the sensor, an easy fix.

I suspect the oil filter hasn't been fitted properly and it's leaking. The OP mentioned that it has just had a service.

The oil filter is an easy fix and should be removable without draining the sump.

The seal at the temperature sensor is easy to check as Pukmeister says. The crank position sensor is more awkward but if you remove the alternator belt cover and find the underlying front engine cover has corroded and flaked paint, there is a good chance that has caused the crank position sensor seal to leak.

Wipe your finger in the oil and sniff. If it smells like cat wee you have a leaking gearbox seal. If not you can wait while we guess where the oil is coming from.

Hi Bendy. If you are looking at back of engine. It is just above the back of bash plate and sump. The oil is coming down onto pic I showed. Fuken nightmare this.

just a thought ,when the oil filter was changed has the old filter seal been left up there,so now you have two up there ,it has happened before

Ok hopefully pics will work. Oil does not smell like cat pee. Smells like engine oil. Thanks for replying. Checked oil filter it is dry and at the front of the sump. This leak is between the two holes with one has a hexhead fitting. Thanks again gser's.

Hi

Which year is the Bike as I had the same problem with my 2012 GSA and it was the output shaft seal. I am not saying your is but I had similar experience. I will suggest that if it is still under warranty you get it to a dealer to have them look at it.

I hope it is not though as with mine the dealer changed the seal but it was still leaking and they had to change the engine casing in the end. I was glad it was under warranty as it would have cost an arm and a leg. I will see if I can find the photos I took at the time.

Hi sojelade. Bike is 2009 and warranty is gone with the wind. Photos would be great thanks. If it is output shafts seal I will get an independent to do it as BMW love to charge body parts for work done. There goes a kidney.
