Oil Leak

I have an oil leak and cannot find the source. It has appeared around the area where the rear shock is attached to the para lever arm and is dripping on the rear of the collector box.

I have had a good look at all the obvious places, sump plug etc but am baffled as to where it is comming from. The bike is a 2001 r1150gs which gets used each day. Of course this week has been the exception and it was a pig to start this morning. Same symptoms as on the clock re-set thread. It did start after I left if for a fag and a brew.

Anyone got any ideas reference the leak?

Have you checked the drain plug under the left side on the airbox? If seriously overfilled with oil the engine will spit the extra into the airbox. Could be dribbling from there, could also cause running problems if air filter is clogged with oil.

May be it's coming past the gearbox output shaft seal, running under the swingarm and then dropping onto the shock mounting area.

Thats on an 1100, I think on the 1150 if the seal leaks it runs down the prop as the gaiter stops it escaping. (I Think)

Thanks for the replies, have looked in the air box, the filter is not contaminated but there was a residue of oil at the bottom so removed the plug to drain. Was not even aware that was there.

Might be the problem although can't see how oil can exit from there with the drain plug in.

Have had a good scan round the rear of the motor can't see anything there so hoping it's not that output seal. Thanks for the piccies anyway, so here's hoping.

How's the damping in your rear shock? It could be that you've blown a seal & lost your damping oil from the shock itself......

It's possible given the mileage, it's probably feeling tired and unfortunately I have to confess I probably would be unable to tell. I did bounce it and it returned ok but that will be the spring at any rate. Aside from feel is there any other way of testing the damping?

Also just in case anyone know a decent place to have it rebuilt?

This hopefully explains why after repeated drops in the moroccan desert, with the bike often going over the horizontal i seem to have developed an oil leak from under the air box. I was getting very worried, and just trawlling here for some answers/ideas.

Will go out and check in the morning!

If it is potentially worse, please tell me later as i've already got to rebuild the front end after disagreeing with the back of a lorry in portugal.
