since doing the strip down over winter and cleaning up the timing cover i got an oil leak from the crank seal ....so i got another one from motorworks fitted it and there still seams to be a small leak its bloody hard to tell though with the pully wheel in the way ..now its my understanding that the flange on the inside of the seal should fold inwards to the engine ....am i correct ??

but in doing it this way it makes the seal a sod to get over the step on the shaft

am i being a plonker and putting it on wrong or somthing ? is the motorworks seal a patent part ?

is it better to go for a BMW part/seal ?

sorry for so many questions

cheers

maybe you caught the lip of the seal on a sharp edge as you fitted it?

some shafts are tapered to prevent this, don't know about this one. if not, a piece piece of masking tape wrapped around the shaft can help.

don't forget to pull off after.

ooh er :)

bloody hell that was quick:cool:

good idea with the tape mate i will order another seal and give that a go:thumb

any tips to get the bastard things out last time it was a real sod :eek

OIL SEAL

Hi, when you get the old one out thoroughly check that when you pulled the other one out you didn't accidentally put a mark on the steel of the shaft cos even the tiniest one will damage the seal , if you can feel anything then with very ,very fine wet and dry paper rub it smooth , otherwise your nextseal will brake too!

Don't use BMW seals, they are crap :rob

In my limited experience (crankshaft, clutch slave cylinder and final output shaft seals) they are mostly single lip seals.

Have a look on MAX BMW site at the parts list and write down the seal dimensions. Then get yourself down to a good engineering shop, the kind that sell hydraulic hoses, bearings etc. and buy a double lipped seal and use that instead. Will also cost you a third of the price to boot.

Someone will probably say I'm talking horse sh*t but just my 2cents worth.

hi delpel i'll give that a go i did think when i first saw the seal that it looked shite quality so i'll try this route as well thanks fella:thumb

the fiche listed the seal sizes as 30x42x7

Yep, thats the inside, outside diameter and the thickness. You may find your seal stockist only has 8mm thick seals but don't worry it'll fit. When you remove a seal take a note of how far in the seal fits and if you can get away with a slightly thicker item.

Worked for me and as they say
"you can't beat a good old double lipper" :rob Don't know who said that actually :blast
