while riding home tonight I noticed I had oil on my right boot.
Having a quick look it would seem I have a leak on the right cylinder at the bottom, looks like it's not on the rocket part but the second part, looks like a rubber gasket sticking out.

I'm about to have a good look and see how bad it is, but can I take this part apart to inspect? not to happy to take the head part off.

DO I need anything special or have to take it apart in an order? if I take it apart will oil spill out everywhere?
It doesn't rain but it poors :) still love the bike.

I know it's not the head gasket as the bike is running lovely.

looks like I have a busy weekend

Check where the oil cooler pipework enters the engine on the right side. There's a seal that's prone to leak and it runs down the side of the engine, working it's way to a low point and then drips/sprays onto your boot. Failing that, check your TDC cover's still in place as you may have a blown shaft seal which is spraying oil out of the inspection hole. These two are more likely than a cylinder head gasket, though i wouldn't rule it out either. Cue Steppers for the font of all wisdom on this though.:thumb2

Do you mean at the base of the barrel, next to the crankcase?

Before you do anything else, try retightening the head bolts that run through the barrel and head. They're fookin tight, but I've known quite a few leak there, and are fine when they have been retightened:thumb2

Think I found the problem, looks like its the inner gasket, someone fitted it incorrectly
Need to get a replacement

Yup, that one sometimes comes off when removing the rocker cover and needs to be put back in place before refitting the cover, otherwise damage can occur.

been following this as I had the same problem on mine during a longish trip down though Spain last year.
I've not delved into the innards of this bike yet so am unfamiliar with that gasket. Can you tell me exactly what it is please?

For me this was the first time but only owned the bike for a month, Looks like its been off many times.

Whats the tourque setting for the rocker bolts? Was worried of over tightening then.

This morning on the ride to work I have a more of a ticking noise coming from the right, it comes and goes.

I might just book it in the garage and give it a once over as I might be a little out of my league

Had exact same happen to me but on left side ;) I'd known the rubber gasket was bit knackered but after checking valve clearances put it back anyway as didn't have spare - got to local shop about mile and left boot was well plastered with oil... quick return to base and ordered couple new ones. At least my left boot is nice and supple now
ps noticed it was bit noisier also, so maybe that's your ticking?

It needs to be put in place on the rocker cover and a very thin smear of oil wiped around the rubber O ring before fitting the rocker cover.
DO NOT put the O ring in the engine and then fit the rocker cover.

I find it a good idea to turn the seal 90deg every time the rocker cover's off, do you agree?

They normally stay in the head and need prising out, or they fall out into the oil drain bowl :D

So i wouldn't know the position they were fitted to be able to turn them 90deg. :D

I lie. You can see the head indent on the O ring ;)

I used to turn them (think I read it on ADV or something) and then I forgot a couple of times. Didn't seem to make any difference - they were always ok...

I know they leak like a bloody sieve if you leave them in the rocker cover and pinch them when you bolt it back together :D

the gaskets turned up at the weekend so I decided to fit them, easy as pie and all the rocker cover bolts tightened up lovely with no issues.

Riding to work, no oil on the boot and the ticking/knocking noise from that cyclinder has gone, must have been oil starvation.

Anyways the oil and noise issue all sorted, now on to the dodgy electrics, no cancellation for the indicators, indicators flashing fast with the head lights and now as of this morning a dodgy button on the starter button!

I hate electrics :D

Sounds like earthing problems.
Try checking the main loom from the front of the bike, by the instruments, to where it goes on the rest of the bike. The 1150's have a big junction point on the RHS of the beak

I fitted my inner seal and all seemed ok but still have oil leaking, should I have changed the Rocker cover outer gasket aswell?
not much now just enough for me to notice :)

Check the "O" ring on the cam sprocket cover.

Yep, that was the cause of my oil leak. When I removed the old one it immediately became apparent that it was badly chewed up on one side, hence the mysterious oil leak. The reason for this is that some numpty must have fitted it badly when replacing the head gasket a few years back. Hang on a minute, I did that.........

At the risk of stating the obvious, it is the small black plastic cover to be found at the rear of the cylinder, giving access to the camchain sprocket. There is one on each side, oddly enough. You can't miss it, it's where the oil is leaking from......
