I've noticed when cleaning the bike, that on the inside of the rear wheel, only on the drive side, there are black splats of oil/grease, not very much at all, but there are none on the other side.

Anybody else had this??

Don't put so much lube on the chain, ah you have not got a chain so it must be something expensive then.

Spooky, is this a one-off or have you had it before. No leaks on the brake system?

Its been doing it since I bought it. I just wondered whether a little amount is normal for other 12GS's. If not, it'll be back to the shop next year.

I'd put my bottom dollar on it being oil from the final drive.

No sign on mine but I will take a closer look, smell may sort out if it comes from the motor or transmission. Gear oil has a very strange but characteristic smell and almost all engine oil in use has a slight burned aroma and is of course low in viscosity.

It appears to be only a very fine covering, but obviously as the wheel rotates it spreads and picks up dirt from the road, so its very difficult to determine what it is.

I'm sure I'll end up taking it back to the garage again. Its already been in twice within three weeks for work:mad:

Do you use ACF 50 or some similar protectant...? I've found teh same but only since I started using ACF 50....

I do use the scottoiler stuff, but I don't think that is the cause, although it would be a good explanation. The reason I think that it isn't the case, is that it was steam cleaned before I picked it up at the dealers and I noticed the stains on my first trip home.

I've also just noticed the same again, after picking it up from the dealers having been steam cleaned again.

Maybe you should keep an eye on your final drive as well Nadeem??

I was at the dealer and got them o check it out - they concluded it was the acf 50 - I also had a very fine coat on the front wheel...

Ahhhh that's the difference, the front is clean.

Bit off topic, but how are you getting on with the acf-50, how often to reapply?? I'm using the Scottoiler stuff an put it on a couple of times a week.

I've applied it once but it seemed to attract more crap than before so I've gone back to the Scottoiler 365 - applying once a week after I wash the bike...

Probably stick to the scottoiler stuff myself then....cheers:beerjug:

Yep- I concur with Laurence- its probably brake pad dust and nothing to fret about. If you look close on the leading edge of the front wheel "spokes" (I assume your on cast wheels) you will see the same thing- tiny flecks of jet black dust from the brakes-they`ve gotta wear and the material has got to go somewhere. If it was oil from the final drive you would see lots of radially dispersed trails of the oil creeping out from the hub centre towards the rim.Bob "C".

My initial thoughts were that it was brake dust, but on inspection, it is definately oily/greasy, which I wouldn't expect from brake dust.

I'll probably have the rear wheel off over christmas and see if I can find any leaks.

I have had the same sort of 'deposits' on my rear wheel since I bought the bike last May. They seemed to be oily / greasy deposits that 'leak' out when the wheel is in motion judging by the uniform spread. The deposits stopped appearing after about 2 1/2 thousand miles. Perhaps the final drive is now dry?! :( I will be taking the bike in for a 6k service soon so I will ask them to investigate.

Monkey,

Checked mine and it is clear all over. But reading your comments about steam cleaning, and knowing BM advise against, could it be that they are putting water etc into a lubricated zone through an atmospheric seal under high water pressure and that it then blows out along with a small amount of lubricant when you ride home? That could account for the light well dispersed coating.

I have seen that happen with trailer wheel bearings.
