Just bought a 1983 st. Nice little bike but I've just noticed a weep from the boot at the gearbox. Thought maybe the output shaft oil seal, any ideas. Was hoping that there was a thread on here devoted to this problem that can safely guide me through the process! Thanks in advance for all your help

Its a "Mono-Lever" transmission. It has oil in the leg and the gearbox output shaft oil seal is designed to breath into the leg.

It could be that the rubber boot is perished and is leaking.

Drain the oil from the leg and gearbox and re-fill to the correct levels and then keep an eye on it. If the gearbox is losing oil into the leg the output shaft oil seal could need replacing - Kenny changed a seal on a Paralever recently and posted pics - same procedure but different oil seal (lips face to the outside on a 'Mono').

Also - check that the hollow bolt that earths the battery to the gearbox and locks the speedometer cable into place is clear and is letting the gearbox breath properly.

Lets see some pics :thumb

Thanks

Thanks Voyager. The bike had been sitting unused for 10 years and I've noticed the rubber speedo drive cover is perished so it may be a bad boot. Will try your advice this weekend

I had a bike that sprung a leak after it had not been run for ages
Got in a panic about what it could or couldnt be
Best tip I had was run it for a thousand miles whilst keepin an eye on all oil levels - if its a seal it may cut itself in and be OK
10000 miles later I pass the same tip to you
HTHY and good luck :thumb2
