Bike 1100 not been used since the snow fell, and was gonna do a little electrical work to it outside.....(new spots)

Didn't like the cold start so decided to leave it running for a bit, without any choke, whilst i had a coffee inside.

Nearly an hour later i went outside to find the oil temp way high, almost top of the scale....:eek It's been stood outside in -2C for an hour now. Starts just fine, but will i have cooked the oil, or anything daft? Or am i worrying about nothing?

Ta very much.

(Note to self: NO MORE COFFEE)

You let it idle for an hour?! :eek
The engine relies on airflow for cooling (across the cylinders and oil cooler) - the actual engine temperature may have been much higher than the oil temp gauge indicated.

There's a 'rule' which even though I've only had my 1100 for a couple of months I religiously adhere to - "no idling" - I press the button and ride off (also stops the abs sulking).

That said - I've heard that excessive idling can lead to the oil sight glass melting and dumping all the oil (it's only plastic) - also it gives the wiring to the hall sensors a hard time (they're not very heat tolerant at the best of times).

But, if it was still running and doesn't have a pool of oil underneath it, then you've probably got away with it - I'd check the sight glass carefully though. There may be other things worth checking / doing - I'm sure others will advise.

Change the oil and filter, take it for a decent run and change it again with a carefull check of the filters for bits.

It was on the mainstand when you abandoned it?

Dont feel bad ......i have done this too.(Although not for an hour)

The sight glass had 'fogged' up .

The oil filler cap 'o' ring had gone a bit hard.

The oil smelled a bit burnt.

Fortunately i was using enhanced protection oil which actually looked ok afterwards........

but i threw in new oil, filter, sight glass and 'o' ring seal..........a year later its still running

Yup.

The oil sight glass fogged up around the edges and has remained so. I guess a replacement will be going on, along with a full oil and filter change. Apart from that all looks well, but i haven't been out fo a spin yet. Daft thing s, I never let it idle, just press and ride......:loopy

Thanks for comments so far. Any other things to check for?

I'd drop the oil and change the filter before any spin. Steptoe's done a how-to for the sight glass change if you search - sounds an easy job.

I heard about a chap who did the same thing with his R1100S (I think it was) and he managed to knacker his battery. You might want to keep an eye on yours.

:nenau

Its not his Battery he should be worried about..

If the sight glass has begun to melt - certainly sounds like it has.

Then I would imagine his Hall Sensor wiring will be thoroughly cooked and thus not long for this world.

Oooops!

Nothing to add other than commiserations ... I hope it gets sorted for you without too much hassle! I do daft things from time to time, so you have my sympathies.

Cheers,

Psyko
