oil temperature - how long to get 5 bars ?

Would like to know what sort of riding time should it take for the R1100GS to get 5 bars up on the RID ? Seems to take at least 10ks of riding - is this too long ? Average air temp. approx. 20 degrees Celcius.
Where will I find the oil temperature thermostat, and is it accessible ?
Does the bike have a problem - or just me and my head

Hi Jack,

It can take for ages depending on temperature. Here in Europe at the moment it is hovering around -1 and this morning I rode 100KM to work with half of my radiator covered by tin foil. And only when I arrived here in Bruxelles after 45 minutes did my Oil temperature get to Five bars.

In the summer here it takes between 5 and 10 kms without the tin foil.

Plus the 1100 does not have a thermostat unlike the RT which does.

and how full of oil you are - i can tell when i'm running low cos the oil heats up quicker.

Why is it so important to get five bars ?. Mine is at 4 bars normally at this time of the year and I assumed that the hotter the engine, the worse it is for the oil etc.

From what i've read & understand the normal reading should be 5 bars showing. My guess would be that the oil is doing it's best job at whatever temperature 5 bars represents (don't recall). Might have something to do with what viscosity you're using in the winter. Surely a BMW tech could answer that question.

Thanks guys, at least one question for me is answered. There is no thermostat in the GS. I pored long and hard at the parts CD, as well as a really good look at the bike, couldn't find a bloody thermostat anywhere ! If it aint there then I'm unlikely to find it, eh.
Still, the time it takes for the oil temperature to reach its " normal " level on the temp gauge leaves me a little concerned. Come winter I figure it is unlikely to reach 2 or 3bars by the time I reach town, an 11k trip.
If the RT has a thermostat, why not the GS ?

Hi ,

Fit one of these, it'll warm up quicker and as long as the temp is below 7 or 8 you won't go into 6 bars.

Hi Richie,
my bike is fitted with the Zweck Design alternate front, sans beak. These sorts of grilles and thelike do not fit.
However, I feel sure I could make something here which would do the job. I'm just not so sure the bike shouldn't have some sort of thermostat.
Might look into what the RTs have fitted, if it's a retrofit thing.......

1150 GS Has Thermostat

Just for info Richo ( and others ), the 1150 GS has the oil thermostat as per the RT, this normally maintains the oil temp at the mid-point on the display, however, in cold weather it still takes longer to reach this.

zweckdesign beak eliminator for R1100GS

Hi Richie,
Here's a link to the German site, mine is fitted with both the oil cooler adornment and the matching front guard.
For me, it changes the look the of the bike, the front guard fits in place over the stock unit.
