OIL THREAD!!!!

Go use you old gear oil - it probably is ok and you might save your customers a few pennies and increase your profits at the same time - I just prefer to use new stuff if at all possible.

I'm afraid i don't have oil in long enough for it to get old.

Even though i buy it in 25 litre drums, with no sell by date on them :D.

I might add something to wikipedia later. As anyone can.......

Good idea to add stuff to Wiki, but errors do get corrected, for obvious reasons :D

Just out of curiosity what make of GL5 gear oil do you use?

now you see you had to go and spoil it .............

wiki-fucking-pedia my arse

On most things it is pretty accurate; more so than any printed encyclopaedia - I suspect that the oil production stuff is pretty accurate.

Chevron estimates the life of all their lubricants to be 5 years if stored correctly - after which they should be tested to ensure that they still meet the original specification.

Not really, but fed up reading cut and pastes and wiki posts on how a refinary works.

It's all EU ruling bollox. :thumb

There is certainly loads to read - but not going to argue anymore!!!!

Have asked Shell what shelf-life they put on their products, I had a reply from them ages ago, but lost the email, so going to get them to re-iterate it.

An opinion was asked for. So i gave one. And i'll stick to it.

if i found 10 year old engine oil i doubt i'd use it, but not because of any sell by date, purely because of the newer oil technology.

But if it were 10 year old gear oil i'd use it. Seeing as the 1150 is ten years old and it would be what was used without any problems in the past, and mineral gear oil has changed very very little over the years. :D

What? You'd fob me off with ancient 10yo old? And there's me planning on bringing my beloved 1150 to London for a service.:D

Opinionated in the negative and abusive sense .e.g in the sense of of 'I am right' and other informed decisions are "piffle" especially when they are those of the people who make the oil in the first place!

Engineer, Steppers has been winding you up for the last three pages:):comfort

PS Steptoe, I hope to be down late April or early May. I'll PM you nearer the time.:thumb

'You pays your money and makes your choice'.

No, he has not been winding me up - I have just been putting him right on a few errors in his argument.

As promised - here is the reply from Shell's Product Technical Team.

I quote,

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Dear Will *******

Thank you for your email.

Regarding your query on the shelf life of lubricants, in particular the GL4 and GL5 rated gear oils. I was advised by our Product Technical team that for most oil and grease products the shelf life is 2 years. The exception being the Aviation (Aeroshell) products & Food approved (Cassida). For GL4/GL5, automotive gear oils the life would be 2 years based on storage at ambient temperature in dry conditions.

Once again, thank you for contacting Shell UK and bringing this matter to our attention. We do hope you have found this information useful.

If you have any other concerns, you can call the Customer Services Centre at 0800 731 8888.

Yours sincerely

So there you have it - I suggest that if anyone tries to sell you older oil then you should turn it down and insist they use new stuff.

So there you have what ?? " Advise", not a statement of fact. Ask them why two years ?, and how long has two year shelf life been company policy.

I called a well known oil supplier just after lunch, asking advise about oil that i'd bought and thought it may have been out of date ( although no date on the bottle), hoping to get the offer of a new up to date bottle of oil, like you had the good fortune to gain, and all the technical advice bod wanted to know was did i have proof of purchase. Oh,and the technical bod wasn't an actual technical bod, he was a bod who worked in technical.

I admire your dogged adherence to follow the party line with no deviation, same as in the global warming thread, the scienteists are right :mmmm - . :D.

Anyway, i'm just off down to halfords, they're marking down all the sell by date oils. I'll get you a few litres while i'm there :thumb
