Oil use on an 1150

I'm not if this is usual or not.

I've only had the bike a couple of months. I gave it a good look over before xmas and noticed that the sight glass was empty - when I topped it up I put about 2 litres in there! I assumed it had been low from when I first bought it.

I've just checked - again the sight glass was empty and I put about half a litre in to bring the level up half way. In that I filled it up approx 1500 miles ago, does that sound like reasonable oil usage?

I've not noticed any leaks although one side did smoke the other day around the exhaust manifold (the lower side - it was on a side stand).

It's done about 45k miles btw. Sound usual or high oil burning?

mine's done nearly 1000 miles and drunk 300 ml of oil.

If it is ridden hard it may drink oil........my sv650 drank oil with spirited riding.


check your sightglass to see if it is leaking oil.

I'd check it more oftern if i were you though , maybe's every 500 miles or at the end of a long days riding

Oil Consumption

The Service and Technical Booklet states:-

Max consumption is

1L per 1000km
1.4 pints per 500 miles

But it all depends on the type of riding you are doing

There can be a knack to checking oil level,easy to think its low.Too much in there and it ends up in the airbox.Do a search for the procedure.
