I don't see any blood. :nenau

You seem to have missed the OP's reply that he is quite happy with the info. he received. So happy, in fact, that he added a dancing Jock, the ultimate accolade of satisfaction.

We can only assume therefore that he is also happy with the style of its delivery?

Not least he has, as he put it in not so many words, saved an arm and a leg. If so it's tricky to see how the poor fellow can have been torn to shreds? Quite the reverse in fact.

A question about "What Oil?"

Me thinks you are going to get on just great here ...... :D

So, what’s the difference between Castrol R4 Superbike Power 10w-50 Fully Synthetic Oil (as sold at my local BMW dealer) and ELF MOTO 4 XT TECH Fully Synthetic 10W50 for precision engineered 4 stroke motorcycle engines (as sold at my local motor factors)?

Answer: £10.02. The former is £15.01 per litre, the latter only £4.99.

I suspect that my GS might be getting the ELF oil if it needs a top up in future.

Good price that. I last used Silkolene 10W50 fully synth from Opie oils, £9.66 per litre, so will have a look for the Elf version next time.

Interestingly enough, I called Vines about engine oil today. The service dept said my 07 12gs had 20/50 mineral oil in it today but at the next service it would have 10/50 Castral mineral oil in it at the next service. No mention of fully synthetic. Would appear different standards are at work here or they got it wrong. But as Castral don't seem to advertise a 10/50 mineral oil I suspect the later.

I got some of Hein Gerickes own label 4T 10W50 fully synthetic oil at the end of October at a reduced price of £18.99 (from £21.99) for five litres and got lucky with a 'buy one, get one free' deal at H-G Portsmouth.

A word of caution, don't use fully synth oils until you are confident your cylinder bores/rings are properly worn in (as recommended by BWM) otherwise you will end up with bore polishing and increased oil consumption/crankcase pressure.

Power 1 racing is a fully synthetic oil. Be aware that synthetic oil should not be used until the engine is fully run in otherwise the engine won't seal properly and will consume oil... Ring up the Castrol helpline in Swindon for some free advice...

Halfords sell it, and its much better value in 5 litre cans.

I agree, its BMW's fault, they are shit at giving basic info to new owners............having had and topped up my 1200 GS for the last two years with Castrol Actevo whilst its been in warranty, the baskets have just changed the spec to some other fancy fully sinth stuff that can't be had at any cost at the last service. Luckely, my R1100RT has not heard of this new stuff and will still quite happily accept an actevo mineral oil injection at my own in-house service intervals:thumb
