Being a complete numpty so far as electrics are concerned, can someone tell me if it's OK to run Gerbing heated jackets directly from the on-board socket, or is it better to connect it to the battery.

It's basically the same thing but with a fuse, you've be getting 12v out of the on board socket.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Well, now ....

It being a jacket and not really likely to be left on inadvertently - I'd be half inclined to wire the supply direct from the battery, but with an in-line fuse of course. That way it's not going to upset the CanBus...

The F800 socket will only give a low amperage and may cut out with the heated jacket. The fuse is in the Canbus system and will reset itself once the jacket plug has been pulled out of the socket.
My wife runs a Klan jacket from the socket OK but my Gerbing and a set of heated boot soles causes the socket to trip when set to full warm.
Give it a try, it will do no damage as the system protects itself. If it dose trip it needs to run directly from the battery. Make sure you keep a set of leads connected to the battery when fitting the new jacket wiring and in line fuse, otherwise you can loose some of the computer info and will need the dealer to reset it for you.
