Had one of those moments today on leaving work - Followed a car out of the estate and onto the dual carriageway. The car pulled out into the traffic flow and I looked right to check for a safe gap, and off I went. Only then did I discover he had changed his mind... So down I went. Ouch.

Fortunately I only bruised my shin.

Discovered that the GSA is remarkably resilient and, apart from some light grazes on the cylinder head protector and engine bars, and a broken mirror glass, it is undamaged.

Mr Hooton's foglight protectors did their stuff and protected the expensive foglight from damage. Sadly the same cannot be said for the Peugeot that I hit - said foglight protector did a good job of denting the hatchback and putting a deep gouge in the paint. The protector itself also did its sacrificial shield thing well, and ended up somewhat munged itself. I'll have to take it off and see if I can bash it straight again.

Now, do BMW sell mirror glasses on their own, or must I cough up several tens of pounds for a whole new mirror? The stem and plastic head are undamaged.

How did the cylinder head protectors get damaged when you have engine bars on? Didn't they do the trick all by themselves?

If you lay a GSA down (without panniers) the engine bars and cylinder head protectors will both make contact with the road.

never dropped a gsa have you?

Yes. Just once. It had no protection and that was the end of our trip through France on day one.
Bought a new GS and the first thing I did was have crash bars fitted but now concerned that they are not sufficient protection - hence my question.

well as previously said even with crash bars you will scratch/scrape something, but hey it all adds to the caracter or the bike with a few war wounds.

Glad you are ok and the bike is easily fixed, put it down to experience and leave a bigger gap next time (the wonders of hindsight).

The bars and head protectors on the GSA protect the heads. the tops of the bars protect the tank but the spot lights are likely to get hit if it falls into something immovable.

If the screen gets pushed sideways, the beak subframe and screen frames are also vulnerable and (very) not cheap to replace. The GSA and GS beak subframes are different.

Thanks. I had a closer look at the weekend when I parked my GS next to a GSA and I see the problem. The GSA bars don't wrap around the cylinder heads like the GS protectors do so I can see where the problem lies.

Mine came with Touratech head protectors already fitted. TBH I prefer the look compared to the standard parts. Mine have also been tested when it stalled in Birmingham rush hour traffic and came out well.

Glad you are OK Roy.
Most of us have at some time done similar, or been close to doing so.
Not as epic as your French ploughing experience !!
