Never considered one before, went to look at something else and, well.....
Walked away but can't get it out my head, I'd be happy with that parked next to the Rockster. Ignore the price:augie

Don't know much about them (although I suppose one Airhead is much the same as another, mechanically!) but it certainly looks pretty.

Looks OK, but driveshaft, shock , starter and possibly gearbox will probably need attention soon, if the haven't been replaced, so see if there are any receipts for the work.
When I bought my 93 with 100,000 km the box had already been done, the shock was poorly and the driveshaft and starter went within 30,000 km.

That bike will have a strange riding position with that cut down seat.

There's only a very limited number out there so they do fetch a premium.

Budget for a replacement seat and rear shock. Worst case scenario, as mentioned above, will be a driveshaft as well. The driveshafts do fail but not as often as you'd believe reading the sites. Longer rear suspension (ohlins etc) can cause the universal joint to bind causing premature failure.

I could not live with the colour.....

And what's that hideous mudguard extension !

Great bikes that could be with a few choice alterations. They can need money spending but once sorted are a joy to ride on smaller roads and a nice bike to own .

nice but price is just ridiculous but I guess in line with uk. Saw a salvage one, a non runner regular 89 gs with hot wired ignition, butchered parts here and there plus carb floats missing and from photo possibly bent forks and some fool bought it for 2000 quid, can only make sense if breaking it afaik.

Having looked at the photographs on s computer instead of my iPhone. That bikes fitted with a lousy keihin y piece. When you look at it if it's also fitted with keihin stainless down pipes (no balance pipe at the front) you'll need to budget for replacement downpipes with a balance pipe otherwise you'll suffer from terrible midrange running issues.

Give the silencer a good hard slap to see if the baffles rattling. Y pieces obviously let the pulses go straight into the silencer and usually knock the baffles out.

Thanks very much guys, I slapped on loads of cream and now the itch has gone.....for now :D Should have heard the alarm bells when they chopped nearly a grand of the price without me even asking.

Pick up a Aprilia Pegaso tomorrow to knock around on and will treat the Rockster to some new shocks and a Sargent seat ready to whisk Mrs.tree to the Alps next summer.

Why do people change them?

Apart from the originals rotting out, there is no point as there is no performance advantage to fit a Y piece to an Airhead

If the orig collector / box is rotted out there is little option but to replace it with a Y piece.
They can be made to work better than the OEM system, but it is not just a case of sticking a Y piece into an otherwise unchanged bike. ,Usually changes to the muffler, air box/filter and carbs are required too, with a less restrictive muffler probably the first requirement, and the rest tuned to that.

Still trying to flog it?

Seriously go and put it on a dyno, get an air/fuel plot and post it up here.

Latest addition to the fleet. Resplendent in Santa colours :D Solves the argument about high or low front guards being better.:thumb
