Opinions on this GSPD

Well! If we're posting pics

Paris Dakars are desert / sand racers, and if you ever ride in sand you will find that it doesn't tend to collect under the front guard.
That is probably why the factory bikes had low guards, and also to keep crap off the bike and the rider, something the high guard doesn't do at all well.

My Sexton GS motor runs great with a keihin y piece although it was set up on the dyno. Would it work even better with a collector box? I'm 65000 miles, uk to oz and still on original drive shaft. Guess that will be next? Have used a ridiculous number of flasher units though.

If you have gone 65000 miles to Oz you have passed the turn off three times!
My GS driveshaft lasted 130,000 km, but they are a dry shaft and if the sliding splines dry out and they start to gall this can shorten the life if the shaft, and the box, considerably. I lubed mine as soon as I bought the bike.
If Sexton had the bike on the dyno he probably knocked a few baffles out of the muffler, then set the airbox / mixture to suit the revised flow.
Problem with removing that large collector is that the stock muffler is a bit too restrictive, particularly if it is partially blocked by the gaskets which should be between the exhaust sections ------.

A few years ago the only choices were original collector or keihin, fortunately there's now a lot more options out there.

my pd came with a keihin y piece and keihin downpipes with out a balance pipe. I spent a fair amount of cash at hilltop on dyno runs trying to get it to run properly. With that setup it's terrible. Original downpipes improve things but the biggest improvement was going back to a collector box. With the bike as bought it was only making 37bhp. Fitting original downpipes and collector had it back to 50.

I know we don't buy these bikes for performance but having them run cleanly and well makes a world of difference.

If you look at the original Dakar bikes built by hpn they run the original collectors

Got to be honest, My R100GS runs perfectly fine without a balance pipe and with the Keihin Y piece ! :steptoe

When John Taylor had that bike it had the low 2 silencer setup with the collector box. It ran and sounded great.

Interesting... I was thinking of some mods for next year as the bike has been neglected of late. Sexton didn't dyno the motor, I did that later myself some years back as I enjoy the process. So the bike is on standard tail pipe and headers with the Keihin y-piece and was up to 52hp on the local dynojet (for what that's worth). Maybe a new Y-piece, tail pipe and a modern ignition to suit the twin-plug head? Although I might go back to single-plug in the unlikely event a trip to S. America comes off. Could really use a new loom but they are mega-bucks of course.

Problem with replacing the electrics is that BMW are no longer using the original suppliers and some - most- of the stuff they are selling is junk.
If you look on Ebay for switches you will see that vendors with NOS, marked Hella , are asking, and getting, twice the list price of the current junk, and secondhand stuff off low mileage bikes is going quickly for more than the current list price.
Most of the wiring failures are within the final couple of inches of the terminal, and I carry a selection of terminals pre crimped to six inches of wire and a Lock It connector on the other end, on my 400,000 km plus G/S. And a couple of long leads with crocodile clips either end so I can bypass the switch and hot wire arything
So far I have used three of the terminals, but always one someone else's bike!
