Ouch! New loom needed.

OK Judge but you´ll have to let me know a day earlier as it will take me an extra day to get there...

I'm sorry, Howard!

But if I buy you an ice cream at Tyrigrava in July; will you forgive me?:hide

OK, I'll talk about loom:
It seems fine on my Scarver.

Have you ever looked inside the front lamp on an old bokser? We call that ''spaghetti'' over here. :-)

They did'nt have much truble with the loom when they used carbid lights, maaaany years ago. :p

I know Harley Davidsons used carbid light in 1919, but I can't remember seeing (see, did see, have seen? My perfect english...) that on the first BMW bikes. So, did the Europeans use electric light before the Americans?

Hope I'll meet you at Tyrigrava, then!

If I can find the place.
Do your ice creams have alcohol in them? Only I've heard that the beer doesn't!:beerjug:

Hi Howard!
Ta-Daaa! If look at ''Over Seas'', you'll got info.

So I'll meet you wednesday july 30th at Tyrigrava?
I'll be wearing GoreTex, and have a pink flower in my buttonhole!

;) Liv.

Thanks M8. I've opted for the "coded" loom from BMW. Costs a bit more than a basic loom but ......it's only MORE BLOODY MONEY!!

Were you pissed when you typed that?

I think it is one which just BMW can decode...:D

Seriously - It is probably colour coded or numbered wiring which enables you to find and replace offending wires more easily.

Cheers

what's a "coded" loom?

All it means is that you get excactly the same loom as was originally fitted to your bike. i.e. if you've had "options" fitted when new, you'll get a loom with all the necessary connections.
Also, I've ordered a new ignition switch. The new one will (should) use the same, original, keys.

thanks.

i imagined they just used the same loom on all bikes & left anything not needed unconnected. they must have made custom looms economical.

ps. before it's last MOT i spent a while trying to get the front fog lights on my passat working. couldn't quite see the backs of the units, but could see the wires going to them and could feel them plugged in. light lit on dash to say they were on.
after removing the "light units" i found they were just fakes, complete with sockets for the loom to plug into

FINISHED

Finished fitting the new loom today. Everything plugged in and worked OK without going up in smoke again. So the fault must have been fatigue or chaffing causing a short somewhere.
So if you're reading this with a 10 year old, 63000 mile airhead in the garage................watch out! It could be you next.

Howard,

how long did the job take, beginning to end? I had the tank off my Adv yesterday and the idea of replacing the loom would scare the poo out of me......

Mike:)

Amazing BMW!

Have you noticed that on airheads (dont realy know about oilheads) there's no fuse for the general electric circuit just for the lights?
It's adviseable to add a fuse to the main plus wire (not the heavy gauge that goes direct to the starter!), it's realy easy.
Miky

mikyh, good idea but where did you put the fuse?

i just had a quick look at the wiring diagram & the only effective place i could see would be between the + at the starter solenoid & the diode board. not very accessible.

give us a clue :)
